The Philadelphia Union have announced the signing of defender Cristian Arrieta to a contract. The former Puerto Rico Islanders player had been training with the club for the last two weeks and impressed team manager Peter Nowak enough to get brought in full-time.

“We're very excited to have Arrieta join our club,” said Team Manager Peter Nowak. “He was one of the best defenders in the USL and we expect him to continue his success in MLS.  His wealth of international experience will also help to strengthen our defensive line."

One of USL-First Division’s more decorated players, Arrieta won the 2009 league MVP award, along with two defender of the year awards during his three year stay with the club.

He’ll most likely replace the released David Myrie in the lineup at right back, his natural position. Known for his scoring touch, Arrieta, 30, netted 17 goals for the Islanders in his 54 appearances for the club.

Prior to joining the Islanders, Arrieta had a lengthy 12-year stint abroad where he played for Italian clubs Lecce and Lecco.
