Landon Donovan Trains With Los Angeles Galaxy
Though Major League Soccer's season is still in jeopardy due to the threat of a players' strike, the USA international is back in California with the Galaxy.
Though his ten-week loan to Everton was considered a success, Donovan was always scheduled to return in March, and he has complied with that timetable.
His teammates, according to reports on the Galaxy web site, were instantly aware of the difference a stint in the Premiership can have on a player.
"He does looks pale," coach Bruce Arena said.
During his time with Everton, Donovan featured in 13 matches, including memorable wins over Manchester United and Chelsea. He also scored two goals and had three assists.
Everton fans expressed their appreciation, chanting, "USA! USA!" on numerous occasions for Donovan.
"I'm gutted he has gone back," wrote one Everton fan on a supporters' message board.
However, Donovan's Galaxy teammates were considerably happier about the return of Major League Soccer's reigning MVP.
Forward Alan Gordon said, "He means a whole lot to this team."
Donovan, who is the squad's captain, has led the team in goals every season he has been with the Galaxy. Last season, Donovan helped the team reach the MLS final, but the club fell short of the championship in a penalty shootout versus Real Salt Lake.
Arena didn't seem surprised that Donovan had done well in England.
"He always had the tools to be able to compete at that level," Arena said.
A return to MLS carries some risks, though. The labor dispute between the players' union and league management has yet to be resolved. If a new contract is not signed by March 26, the players have voted and vowed to striker.
Such an outcome would leave Donovan without valuable playing time leading up to the World Cup.
