D.C. United, New York Beef Up Midfields
The two rival clubs made midfield additions.
By Zac Lee Rigg
Among the slew of news to shoot down the pipeline late on Friday, two Northeast MLS clubs bolstered their midfielders with new additions.
First, D.C. United added Kurt Morsink. Given that the 25-year-old, who was training with D.C. already, spent the last three years on the Kansas City Wizards, mostly with now-United head coach Curt Onalfo, this acquisition came as no surprise.
Slightly more surprising is that United released Flo N’Galula, who had only joined the club back in January.
"We are pleased to be adding Kurt to our team," said United general manager Dave Kasper. "He is an experienced player who will add solid depth to our midfield."
Close rivals New York Red Bulls used its Scandinavian connections to land Estonian midfielder Joel Lindpere. The move, as per usual, is pending the international transfer certificate.
"Joel is an experienced midfielder who can play in many different positions," said New York general manager and sporting director Erik Soler. "We have watched him play for a long period of time and we are confident that he will be able to adjust to the MLS game."
Lindpere spent the last three years in Norway with Tromso IL and has trained with New York for two weeks. The 28-year-old has a hefty 74 caps with the Estonian national team.
