Salt Lake, San Jose Cut Ties With Players
Some teams in the West did a little roster cleaning.
By Zac Lee Rigg
Despite the deep snow blanketing the East coast this winter, Western Conference MLS teams engaged in a little spring cleaning this week.
Real Salt Lake led the way Tuesday by clearing four players off the roster. High-profile acquisitions Rachid El Khafili and Abe Thompson were waived before either could make much of an impact for the team. Rookie defenders Kris Banghart and Justin Davis were released.
El Khafili joined RSL amid some flurry from the Netherlands but never lived up to the hype during his half year stay in Utah, making only four appearances. RSL snatched Thompson off the waiver wire at the tail end of last year, but he departs before appearing in a Salt Lake jersey.
The San Jose Earthquakes followed suit by putting defender Aaron Pitchkolan on waivers. Following a trade from FC Dallas, Pitchkolan made nine apperances in half a season for the 'Quakes.
It wasn't all separation talk in the West, though. The Colorado Rapids today announced that Conor Casey signed a brand new three-year contract.
"I'm really excited that the Rapids are committed to me and that my future is with this club," said Casey. "I am looking forward to the coming years, as we continue to build something special. Having played in my hometown the last several seasons and now knowing I’m going to be staying here playing for my home club is a great feeling."
The 28-year-old has resurrected his career with Colorado. Last year he finished second in the MLS goalscoring charts with 16, earned an All-Star call-up, finished on the MLS Best XI, and forced his way back into the United States national team.
"We're thrilled to have Conor re-sign with his hometown team," said Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber. "He was a dominant player during the 2009 MLS season and we hope to see him continue his success with the Rapids and with the U.S. national team."
