Red Bull NY To Take On Santos In New Stadium
Brazilian club Santos, the club that nurtured Pele and Robinho, will take on the MLS team in a grand opening match for the new stadium.
The Red Bulls will take on Brazilian power Santos FC in the Grand Opening of Red Bull Arena on Saturday, March 20th.
Founded in 1912, Santos has a storied history in Brazil. Winners of 17 Paulista Championships, including in 2006 and 2007, Santos is renowned as being the first club where Pele – one of the greatest players in the sport’s history – started his career in 1956 when he was 15 years old. Santos has also won two Brazilian Championships in 2002 and 2004. Along with Pele, Santos has had many Brazilian stars in its ranks including Robinho, Giovanni and Elano.
For years, Major League Soccer's New York team has struggled to draw fans in the cavernous confines of Giants Stadium, but the new state-of-the art stadium being completed for the grand opening is a far more intimate space likely to draw more fans of the sport.
