D.C. United Deals Fred To Philadelphia, Gets Perkins

D.C. United made a deal to bring back a familiar face in goal, Troy Perkins, while the Philadelphia Union pick up a wily player in the Brazilian, Fred.

Major League Soccer's newest team, the Philadelphia Union, and one of the league's original clubs have swapped key players in a deal announced today. The MLS expansion club has acquired allocation money, D.C. United’s 2010 MLS SuperDraft first round pick (#7 overall) and Brazilian midfielder Fred. In exchange, Philadelphia Union sent their #1 allocation ranking to D.C., which United used to obtain 2006 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, Troy Perkins.

Perkins played for four years with D.C., and since his departure to Norway's Valerenga in 2008, the club has struggled to replace him. They missed the playoffs in both of the two past seasons.

“To be back in the black and red – it’s more than just a feeling," said Perkins on the official blog of D.C. United. "It’s something deep in the heart and the soul. D.C. United is where things began and where I belong."

Philadelphia now hold the #6 spot in the allocation rankings.

“This deal enables us to continue to shape our team to compete both now and in the future,” said coach Peter Nowak.

In three full seasons with D.C. United, Fred made 60 starts, played in 72 games and had 11 goals and 16 assists. His best season came in 2007, when he notched seven goals and seven assists.
