Chivas USA's Lillingston Joins Club Tijuana On Loan

Eduardo Lillingston's eight goals in 2009 couldn't convince Chivas USA to keep him in Los Angeles, and the 32-year-old will join Club Tijuana in the Mexican second division on loan for half a year.

David Beckham set precedent when he joined Major League Soccer by becoming the first Designated Player, and it appears his offseason loan moves have caught on too.

Currently enjoying his second in what is becoming an annual stint with AC Milan, fellow marquee players Landon Donovan (Everton) and Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Veracruz) followed Beckham out of the United States for game action during the extended MLS offseason.

Add Eduardo Lillingston to that list. The Chivas USA striker will join Club Tijuana for the Bicentenario 2010 season, which will end in June. That means the Goats' top marksman for 2009 won't be available for new coach Martin Vasquez until the international transfer window opens on July 15.

"This move allows us some flexibility with our roster, and will give Eduardo a good opportunity to play games during the offseason and before rejoining our team," said Chivas USA Vice President of Soccer Operations Stephen Hamilton. "We hope Eduardo does well in his time with Tijuana, and we look forward to his return in July ready to help the team toward MLS Cup."

Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente, to give it its full name, currently resides in the Mexican second division. Lillingston is a 12 year veteran of the top division in Mexico. However, he will have some familiarity in Tijuana, as former Chivas USA midfielder Francisco ‘Panchito’ Mendoza will join the team as well, on loan from Chivas de Guadalajara.
