Seattle Sounders Coach Sigi Schmid Hospitalized

The Seattle coach is suffering from a bout with pneumonia.

Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid, who led the Columbus Crew to the MLS Cup last season, is currently hospitalized for pneumonia.

Schmid was admitted to Overlake Hospital on Thursday night after experiencing difficulty breathing.

The German-born coach, whose stout presence on the sideline guided the USA U-20 team in 2005, was diagnosed with pneumonia. His condition was stabilized and he is now improving, although he remained hospitalized through Saturday.

Schmid was once coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy, one of the two teams contesting the current MLS Cup. He won the championship with the Galaxy in 2002.

Schmid was lauded for his coaching prowess this season by leading the Sounders to the playoffs in their first season in MLS.
