A quick response goal from Javier Morales, a penalty from Robbie Findley, and lucky strike from Andy Williams were enough to upset the Crew after Guillermo Barros Schelotto dominated the opening, scoring twice to put the Crew ahead.
Will Hesmer – 6
Bailed his defense out early in a one-on-one vs. Andy Williams. Maybe could have done more to stop the first goal.
Frankie Hejduk – 4.5
Looked good going forward, getting in behind the defense and putting in several effective crosses. Got what he deserved when he dragged down Fabian Espindola for a penalty. In a playoff game that type of blatant foul is inexcusable from a veteran. Also kept Morales on-side for RSL's first.
Chad Marshall – 7
Showed his range of passing and shut down the play of the RSL center forwards.
Eric Brunner – 6.5
Gave away possession cheaply once, but otherwise partnered well with Marshal. With Marshall marked out of every set piece he did not do enough with his chances which included a golden opportunity for a tap-in on a set piece that he simply failed to connect with.
Gino Padula – 6
Did his job without mistakes or doing anything special in attack.
Eddie Gaven – 5
Got himself in good positions and found space on the wing but couldn’t finish any of his chances or produce effective crosses.
Brian Carroll – 4.5
Never imposed himself on the game in any meaningful way.
Danny O’Rourke – 5
Hard tackling defensive midfielder did his best to break up plays, but he let Morales get away from him for the first RSL goal. Picked up a yellow for a professional foul to stop a RSL counter that might have saved a goal.
Emmanuel Ekpo – 6.5
Did a good job finding space on either wing but lacked the final pass to his teammates. Played a very direct style, putting pressure on the RSL defense whenever he touched the ball.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto – 8
Played like he was 26, not 36. He popped up all over the field and even got back on defense. He hit his long free kick perfectly so that when it missed everyone it still hit the back of the net. For his second goal, he caused the turnover and calmly finished the play off himself.
Alejandro Moreno – 5
Looked injured early and did nothing, but came out active in the second half. Put on an acting school in the second half to earn a yellow card.
Robbie Rogers - 6
Replaced Ekpo, and looked active on the left wing providing good service into the box.
Steven Lenhart – 5
Replaced Hejduk. He didn’t play long, but he gets a rating regardless after missing three good goal scoring opportunities to get the Crew back in the game.
Jason Garey – NA
Real Salt Lake
Nick Rimando – 7.5
Got caught in no-man’s land on Schelotto’s cross/shot free kick. Did a good job dealing with the Crew’s set pieces and crosses, except for Schelotto’s cross/shot free kick. His positioning was superb, and it needed to be as his defense lost almost every header on crosses and set pieces. Loses a rating point for starting time wasting in the 53rd minute.
Robbie Russell – 4.5
Got caught with his pants down when he turned the ball over in defense leading to the second goal. Also, got away with a blatant hand ball at the top of the box.
Jamison Olave – 7
Was the only one who looked solid in the RSL defense, winning several one-on-one battles with the Crew’s danger men, but couldn’t close down GBS on the second Crew goal. Did a good job marking Marshall on all the set pieces. Missed a free header off a corner in the second half that might have mattered if not for Williams’ goal.
Nat Borchers – 5.5
Might have done better to close down Schelotto on the second goal, and allowed the Crew to win far too many headers in the box.
Chris Wingert – 6
Covered his center backs well, but every time he did Frankie Hejduk exploited the open space. Disappeared in the second half as he stayed at home on defense.
Andy Williams – 7
Led the attack early getting himself behind the defense and putting in dangerous crosses. Got very lucky when the referee failed to see his hand ball inside the box. Put in his own cross/shot from a short corner that found the back of the net.
Kyle Beckerman – 7
Continued to show that he is a quality MLS midfielder. Did a good job breaking up the Crew attack and playing the ball forward for counters. Showed his vision to chip the ball in to Morales for the goal.
Javier Morales – 7
Nice passing touch early to let Andy Williams in on goal. Did well to find space behind the Crew defense and could not have picked a better time to score his goal. Largely faded out of the game in the second half.
Will Johnson – 5.5
Did nothing in the first half and should have done more to track Hejduk. Looked better once he pulled closer into the center of the park, but still didn’t impress.
Fabian Espindola – 5.5
Just when it looked like he would add nothing but offsides calls, he put the juke on Hejduk to earn a penalty late in the first half. He mostly wandered around out wide on the left in a failed attempt to get in behind Hejduk.
Robbie Findley – 6
When called upon he stepped up and put away the penalty, but struggled with his first touch and didn’t get in enough good positions to impact the game.
Yura Movsisyan – 6
Replaced Espindola and immediately got involved on the counter to put pressure on the Crew defense and provide a release valve.
Clint Mathis – NA
Jean Alexander – NA
