Goal.com's MLS Player Of Week 30: Chivas USA's Sacha Kljestan

A sparse week in MLS play due to international matches saw Sacha Kljestan put on the performance of the bunch.

Perhaps spurred on by being spurned at the international level, Sacha Kljestan put on the best performance of an abbreviated week in Major League Soccer play.

As his countrymen sealed qualification to the World Cup, Kljestan suited up for Chivas USA. He curled in the free kick that led to the game's opening goal and three minutes later later he made sure of the points with his fifth goal of the season. His goal came in some style – the 24-year-old burst through three Kansas City Wizard defenders and then sharply nutmegged Kevin Hartman.

“Even with only three MLS games taking place Saturday in the excitement of World Cup qualifying, Sacha Kljestan stood out as a top performer,” said chief editor Andrea Canales. “The Chivas USA midfielder has woken up from his season-long slumber and his dynamic play and thunderous goal are proof positive of that.”

The 2-0 win over the visiting Wizards made sure Chivas USA will be in the MLS postseason for the fourth year running. With three games remaining for the Goats, the team still has an outside shot of topping the Western Conference.

“Sacha Kljestan was simply superb against Kansas City and capped his performance with a goal and an assist,” said Toronto correspondent Talha Zaheer. “Only a string of outstanding saves from Hartman kept him at bay. He sealed Chivas USA a spot in the playoffs and they have an awfully good chance of topping the Western Conference as well!”

In the league's lone midweek game, Jeff Cunningham took his season tally to a league-leading 17 goals with a winner for FC Dallas over the San Jose Earthquakes. Cunningham is nearly singlehandedly keeping Dallas in the playoff hunt, with two games left for the Texan team.

“He isn't on for 90 minutes but those moments of energy are devastating,” pointed out Goal.com Magazine editor in chief Greg Lalas. “Like setting up David Ferreira for the first goal, then snagging the winner against San Jose. The three points put the darkhorse Dallas side within a Dario Sala punt of the playoffs. Incredible.”

Gino Padula also received votes for his game-winning strike gave the Columbus Crew a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution.
