Goal.com ran the rule over the two teams who have recently had Sigi Schmid as coach. This time, his current squad, the Sounders, pulled off the upset win over the Crew.
Player Ratings - Columbus Crew
Will Hesmer - 3 - Had a double chance to prevent the opening goal.
First, he let the rebound from Brad Evans' attempt get away from him,
then Levesque's follow shot was very stoppable, but Hesmer was
distracted by letting the ball go in the first place and didn't react
well. Then Hesmer nearly scored an own-goal when he missed a ball and
the rebound off the post hit his back.
Eric Brunner - 6 - Doesn't seem to have much speed, but somehow always manages to stop the speedsters on the opposing sides.
Gino Padula - 6 - helped create chances with his overlapping runs, yet covered well on defense time after time.
Jed Zayner - 5 - Zayner did his job defensively, but offered very little going forward.
O'Rourke - 4 - Easily frustrated by the seeming injustice of Seattle's
lead, but his tantrums don't count as effective defending.
Robbie Rogers - 6 Lively as ever, but his lack of precision on the final pass buried chance after Columbus chance. Faded in the second half.
Gaven - 7 - Hit the post and drew a freekick - not really his fault
that his teammates couldn't finish off the chances he helped create.
Carroll -6 - Carroll quietly does the things that allows other players
to shine, but the dirty work goes nowhere when the opportunities go
Kevin Burns - 4 - Looked overmatched most of the
game, hit a number of poor passes, though he would also intermittently
hit a good one, but overall, inconsistent in execution, albeit tireless
Guillermos Barros Schelotto - 6 - Schelotto was at
the center of most chances created by the Crew, but his penalty kick
miss was awful - the horrid delay notwithstanding, top pro players push
back against that pressure much better than Schelotto did in that in
Alejandro Moreno - 5 - Moreno was being his usual
pesky self, creating chances by drawing fouls, but his simulation in
the box went too far. His hustle and drive are never in doubt, but he
doesn't help the Crew when he flops.
Steven Lenhart: 5 - Lenhart was active, as any late sub should be, but his finishing wasn't effective
Keller - 8 - the class of the Seattle squad, calmed his teammates time
after time, stoned the Crew on a couple of good chances that then had
players aiming for the corner and missing.
Tyrone Marshall - 5 - Fiesty defender was too easily baited by the bothersome Ale Moreno
González - 5 - Gonzalez was in the thick of things when the Crew
dominated, and though his defensive effort wasn't always pretty, it was
just enough to hold off most chances by Columbus
James Riley - 5
- Riley engaged in gamesmanship which may have helped unsettle the Crew
before the penalty kick attempt, and will probably take the yellow card
gladly in exchange for the miss by Schelotto.
Hurtado 5 - the physical defender was out of control on his shoulder
charge to Gaven in the box, but otherwise, he did well to keep the
Crew's lively attack in check and back up the midfield play of the
Fredrik Ljungberg - 7 - Another quality player for
Seattle, but Ljungberg often gets too ambitious with his passes. He's
not in the Premier League any more and sometimes, he needs to keep it
simple with his teammates.
Brad Evans - 7 - Played well against his former team, probing the defense
Zakuani - 5 - Zakuani seemed a bit lost when Seattle were pushed far
back and defending desperately. He's a player who needs service and he
doesn't really shine when it doesn't arrive.
Osvaldo Alonso - 6
- The grunt-work of the midfield is often shouldered by Alonso and he
rose to the challenge with Seattle fighting for their playoff lives.
Roger Levesque - 6 - His
quick timing on the rebound led to the game's only goal. It was the
perfect way for the spot starter to make a push for more playing time.
Montero - 6 - Montero buzzed around the Crew goal as a constant threat.
That kept the Crew unable to committ fully to earning the equalizer.
Patrick Ianni - 5 - The young defender did well in clearing out many of
the Crew's desperate attempts into the box in search of a late goal.
Pete Vagenas - N/A
