Goal.com's MLS Player Of Week 27: Houston's Brad Davis

Brad Davis assisted two and scored the game-winner to earn himself Goal.com's MLS player of the week honors.

Usually, if you assist twice in the opening five minutes, your job for the night is done as an attacker and you can phone in the rest of your shift.

Not so for Brad Davis in matchday 27. The Houston Dynamo winger floated in the set pieces that put the hosts 2-0 ahead of Real Salt Lake, but he still had work to do. After RSL clawed back into the game (despite being a man down), Davis scored the game winner with the minutes left in the match waning.

“Brad Davis was the man this week,” said Salt Lake correspondent Randy Davis. “He served in two excellent balls off of set pieces that gave Houston a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes against Real Salt Lake. He suffered the foul that led to Jamison Olave's ejection. And then, to round out things out, he casually blasted in the game winner from 22 yards out.”

With games in the regular season running out, teams are making frantic scurries toward a playoff berth. The three points over RSL hauled Houston up to tied with the Columbus Crew at the top of the table, with both keeping an eye on the Supporters' Shield.

“With L.A. nipping at their heals Houston needed a win to stay tops in the West, and Davis delivered in a big way,” said associate editor Allen Ramsey. “One of the most underrated players in the league, Davis has always been one of my favorite players to watch, but this year I think his game has gone up another level.”

Columbus drew with the Chicago Fire, coming back from two goals down in Chicago to salvage a point. Besides any Supporters' Shield implications, chief editor Andrea Canales is monitoring another title chase: that of the MLS MVP.

“Although Schelotto was quiet for the first half against the Fire, he sparked the Crew's comeback effort and notched both goals that helped Columbus earn the draw,” Canales said. “His technical skill and savvy are as sharp as ever, even coming back from injury. Schelotto is going to give Landon Donovan a run for the MVP trophy.”

Zach Thornton also received votes for a sterling effort in goal to keep Seattle Sounders FC at bay and earn his 10th shutout of the season for Chivas USA.
