MLS To Stop Play During World Cup Group Stage

Major League Soccer has announced a stoppage in league play during the 2010 World Cup group stages.

Major League Soccer announced on Wednesday that for the first time in the history of the league they will halt play during the group stages on the World Cup.

“The decision to stop League play during the group phase of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is part of MLS’ commitment to deepen its connection with the millions of soccer fans in the United States and Canada,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber in a press release.  “The World Cup will be a focal point for all MLS fans and several MLS players will compete with their national teams at the tournament.”

The stoppage in play will run between the final MLS matches before the group stage on June 10 until after the final group games are played on June 25.

Additionally the league has planned to leave the schedule open on the days that the World Cup semifinals and final are to be played to avoid any conflicts with the biggest matches in the world.
