Goal.com's MLS Player Of Week 26: Dallas' Jeff Cunningham
Jeff Cunningham turned on the magic against the LA Galaxy, scoring two and assisting two on the way to a 6-3 win for Dallas.
The voting for Goal.com's Major League Soccer player of matchday 25 was unanimous. FC Dallas striker Jeff Cunningham collected every last vote.
Dallas notched its second away win of the season when it visited the Los Angeles Galaxy. Cunningham scored two and assisted two on the way to handing the hosts a 6-3 battering.
“He now has 12 goals for the year and 116 for his MLS career, or second all-time behind D.C. United's Jaime Mareno,” said Seattle correspondent John Zielonka. “Making Cunningham's scores more memorable was the end of Galaxy 'keeper Donovan Ricketts 300+ minutes streak without giving up a goal.”
Cunningham took advantage of a lack of pace in the LA backline to run it ragged. Gregg Berhalter in particular looked downright sloth-like compared to the blistering pace of Cunningham.
“Cunningham once again sparked the attack for FCD, this time scoring twice in a 6-3 win over LA,” said associate editor Allen Ramsey. “It's amazing what Cunningham has been able to do for his team this season, and Saturday's showing was top class.”
The 32-year-old has had trouble finding a home lately. In the past six years he's had five different employers. Despite his impressive goal rate, staying in one club has proven difficult for the striker.
“On Saturday night, I heard repeatedly from other reporters who have covered his career that Jeff Cunningham is a horrible teammate,” said chief editor Andrea Canales. “They also all agreed that he is a good soccer player when he wants to be, and he picked Saturday night as his time to shine. He has the speed and the moves to be a major force for Dallas - if he doesn't destroy team chemistry the way he often has.”
