Goal.com's MLS Player Of Week 23: NE Revolution's Kheli Dube
Kheli Dube hit a hat-trick against Real Salt Lake to give the New England Revolution three points and to give him Goal.com's MLS player of the week honors.
Hat-tricks win you Goal.com's Major League Soccer player of the week honors. In matchday 23, New England Revolution forward Kheli Dube went out determined to win that accolade, and his three-goal haul against Real Salt Lake did just that. As a by-product, it also helped his team.
“New England came into this one wondering where the goals were going to come from, with Steve Ralston not starting and of course Taylor Twellman out,” said Salt Lake correspondent Randy Davis. “Dube answered that question with the triple. True, they were all the result of nice setups, but he got into the right positions and when he got the chances he put them away.”
Last time those two teams met, RSL handed the Revs an embarrassing 6-0 beatdown. Dube's hat-trick may not have made up for that result, but it was a statement of intent from the 26-year-old.
“Dube found his goal scoring form for New England on Sunday night with a hatty that pushed the surging Revs past RSL,” said associate editor Allen Ramsey. “Dube has the talent to be a good forward in MLS and this may have been the breakout game he's been looking for.”
The Zimbabwean's hat-trick helped keep a host of others within a shout of POW honors at bay. Juan Pablo Angel, Omar Cummings, and Sacha Kljestan each hit a brace. Dasan Robinson and Chris Wondolowski each headed home game winners deep into injury time. The one who ran Dube closest in the voting was New York Red Bulls' striker Angel. The Colombian helped his team overcome a man deficit and a 16 game winless skid to finally snatch three points.
“I'm going with the cliched goalscorer, since Juan Pablo Angel lifted his team out of the depths of despair by scoring twice, including the winning goal with his team a man down,” said chief editor Andrea Canales. “New York was reminded, even given their dreck of a season, that they have a classy star on board.”
