Red Bulls Finally Win Against FC Dallas
New York finally notched a win. It came against Dallas after head coach Juan Carlos Osorio stepped down.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.--The New York Red Bulls began a new era after the resignation of head coach Juan Carlos Osorio on Friday afternoon after going winless in their last sixteen games in all competitions. Assistant manager Richie Williams will continue as caretaker manager until the end of the season.
FC Dallas came to New York in need of a win to help solidify their mixed form having won three and lost three in their last six games. Its most recent game was a 0-2 loss to the Columbus Crew.
Juan Pablo Angel opened the scoring after only four minutes before Dax McCarty equalized just fifteen minutes later. Dane Richards quickly responded before FC Dallas equalized again through Dave van den Bergh. Angel gave the die hard fans something to cheer about as he scored the winner with only three minutes left in the game. The Red Bulls won the game despite Kevin Goldthwaite receiving a well-deserved red card in the second half for taking a swing at Andre Rocha.
First Half
The Red Bulls came out with a point to prove and it did not take long for that intensity to yield results. In the fourth minute, Albert Celades gained possession inside the center circle, looked up and chipped the ball over the top of the FC Dallas defense to Juan Pablo Angel. The Red Bulls captain deftly lofted the bouncing ball over a charging Dario Sala to open the scoring.
The game went back and forth without any clear chances until the 19th minute. A long ball up the right wing from FC Dallas right back Drew Moor could only be flicked on by a diving Kevin Goldthwaite before it reached Jeff Cunningham on the end line. Cunningham chipped the ball back to the penalty mark where Dax McCarty was arriving behind the play. McCarty calmly aimed his header over Danny Cepero into the top left corner of the net.
But the resurgent Red Bulls would not be denied. In the 27th minute, a nice set up pass from Celades found Wolyniec cutting from the center out to the left of the FC Dallas box. The veteran striker cut back sharply and squared the ball to Dane Richards who slammed the ball past Sala.
An incredible defensive header saved FC Dallas from conceding a third in the 33rd minute as Angel played in Richards down the right wing. Richards hit a driven cross through the six-yard box with Sinisa Ubiparipovic crashing the far post, but Drew Moor averted disaster by diving in with a glancing header to put the ball just past Ubiparipovic.
Second Half
The second half opened with FC Dallas making its intent clear, but most of the Red Bulls remained composed and denied Dallas from turning possession into goal scoring opportunities.
However, Kevin Goldthwaite was unable to keep his composure in the 61st minute during a Red Bulls corner. Substitute Andre Roach marked Goldthwaite very tightly, pulling on his jersey. Goldthwaite reacted angrily pulling away from Rocha and lashing out with a half punch-half slap leaving the referee with no choice but to show the Red Bulls defender a straight red card.
Down a man, the Red Bulls pulled back defensively and the next ten minutes consisted of sustained FC Dallas possession resulting in a plethora of set pieces and crosses. Finally, former Red Bull Dave van den Bergh came back to haunt his old club in the 72nd minute. As Dax McCarty drove through the middle the ball got away from him and rolled to van den Bergh on the top left corner of the box. Despite a strong challenge from Dane Richards, van den Bergh fired a shot off the outside of his left foot, which curled around a diving Cepero into the bottom right corner of the goal.
After the equalizer, Dallas continued attacking as it pulled defender Kyle Davies for attacker Eric Avila. Richie Williams brought on Jorge Rojas and Mac Kandji to help open the game and relieve the pressure. Again, Dallas had several corners and set pieces, but van den Bergh could not connect any of his service with his teammates as the Red Bulls cleared all to safety.
With only three minutes left in the match, Kandji found himself with some space on the left wing. He took a long touch towards the middle and fired a well-hit shot towards Sala’s far post. Sala knocked the ball down and Juan Pablo Angel reacted first to slam the ball past the stranded goalkeeper.
The game finished with a series of wide open counter attacks by both teams but it was the Red Bulls who looked more dangerous as FC Dallas poured everything into the attack without result.
