Joseph Goal, Missed PK Helps Revs Beat Seattle 1-0

New England holds on for an important road win despite its replacement coach’s ejection and a missed penalty kick by Seattle’s Fredy Montero.

SEATTLE, Wash.— The New England Revolution (8-5-8, 32 points) walked away with a hard fought win in their first ever match against Seattle Sounders FC (7-6-6, 27 points). Midfielder Shalrie Joseph accounted for the only goal of the game in the 21st minute. Referee Baldomero Toledo ejected Revs assistant coach Paul Mariner right before the half with head coach Steve Nicol serving the second of a two match ban. Goalkeeper coach Gwynne Williams took over command for New England in the second half.

Seattle forward Fredy Montero played a role in a couple of missed opportunities for the Sounders in the first half. While in an offside position, the Colombian got his head in the way of a shot that appeared to be headed towards an open net.

Montero then missed a penalty kick after midfielder Peter Vagenas was brought down in the penalty box. A clearly irritated Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said after the match that Montero was not the primary player assigned to take the kick.

Out with injuries for New England were defender Chris Albright (bone bruise and lateral meniscus tear) and Taylor Twellman (concussion).

Seattle midfielder Freddie Ljungberg sat out tonight’s match. He experienced disorientation and memory loss after the Galaxy game last Saturday. The condition is not related to his previous bout with migraines. The former Arsenal player is under a 7-10 day evaluation window. Ljungberg’s playing status for Saturday’s match against conference leaders Houston remains unknown.

Sounders defender Tyrone Marshall was not available due to a red card suspension for two yellow cards in Seattle’s win against the Galaxy.

The Sounders were held scoreless for the fourth time in five MLS games. New England raised its record above .500 and appear to be poised for a late season playoff run.

First Half

Seattle forward Nate Jaqua had several opportunities to score starting in the 11th minute. Midfielder Brad Evans placed a long cross to the Northwest-native who barely missed the header towards the goal. A minute later, midfielder Osvaldo Alonso hit a low pass to Jaqua that eluded him in front of the goal.

Shalrie Joseph scored his sixth goal of the season in the 21st minute to give the Revolution a 1-0 lead. Captain and midfielder Steve Ralston connected with a short pass to forward Edgaras Jankaukas. The tall striker lofted a pass towards a streaking Joseph, who had a Seattle defender all over him. Keller fell to the ground in anticipation of a low shot. While falling, the rangy New England midfielder missed the ball with his right foot and used his left to put the ball past the Seattle ‘keeper and into the net.

In the 33rd minute, Seattle midfielder Peter Vagenas sent a corner into the box area. New England ‘keeper Matt Reis reached up and redirected the ball to Sounders defender Patrick Ianni. His downward header hit the right post and bounced away.

Five minutes later, Steve Zakuani, Seattle first round draft pick in last year’s MLS draft, took a hard shot that should have been a goal. Unfortunately for the Sounders, Fredy Montero, who was in an offsides position, saw the ball hit his head and deflect away from the goal.

Referee Toledo handed out two yellow cards to the Revs and assistant coach Paul Mariner in the three minutes that were added to the first half. The yellows were given to forward Edgaras Jankauskas for a handball in his own box area and defender Jay Heaps for dissent.

Second Half

In the 54th minute, Montero received a caution for goalie interference. With Revs ‘keeper preparing for a free kick, Montero saw the ball in Reis’ hand and decided to knock it away with his head. Referee Toledo immediately reached for his pocket and issued Montero a yellow card. As a result of an accumulation of cautions, the Colombian will miss Seattle’s next game.

The Sounders threatened on a counter three minutes later. Montero passed the ball to midfielder Brad Evans. His shot was spot on, but Reis reached out and deflected it for a Seattle corner kick. Vagenas' subsequent kick went into the box area and a mad scramble ensued in front of the Revs goalie. Reis batted down Zakuani’s shot and grabbed control of the ball to stop the threat.

Seattle’s newest acquisition on defense, Leo Gonzalez, received a pass from Montero from the left touchline in the 63rd minute. The Costa Rican national crossed the ball in front of the net. Revs defender Emmanuel Osei made a sliding save to clear the ball over the net.

Reis received the fourth yellow card of the match in the 65th minute. Toledo thought the ‘keeper was taking too long on the free kick and issued a caution.

New England had an opportunity 90 seconds later on a long throw from defender Darrius Barnes. Forward Kheli Dube received the ball and one-timed it into the right side netting. He received a short pass in front of the goal from New England captain Steve Ralston in the 72nd minute. Dube turned around and shot the ball directly into the belly of Keller.

Referee Toledo issued his last caution of the night to Seattle midfielder Sanna Nyassi, with his twin brother Sainey watching from the Revs bench. The Nyassi twins were playing their first MLS match ever against one another.

The four extra minutes of added time failed to generate the fireworks of the first half. Toledo blew the whistle to end the game as the 32,705 in attendance booed the officials off the field.

New England returns home to meet Real Salt Lake on Sunday. Up next for Seattle is an away match on the same day against Western Conference league leaders Houston Dynamo.
