Chivas USA Acquires Jesus Padilla On Loan From Guadalajara
The young Mexican-American forward climbed through the youth ranks at the fabled Mexican club.
Chivas USA has acquired forward Jesus Padilla on loan from their associated organization in Mexico, Club Deportivo de Guadalajara. It was Padilla who got Guadalajara owner Jorge Vergara to declare that, despite the famous letter written by Ignacio Lopez Hernandez closing the roster ranks to all but those born in Mexico, the club would indeed be more flexible.
"We go by the definition in the Constitution," Vergara said recently. "Mexican law says that you are a Mexican if you are born outside Mexico and both parents are Mexican."
That move opens up a whole host of potential new players for the club.
Padilla, who was born and raised in San Jose, California, joined the youth ranks of Chivas de Guadalajara when he was fourteen.
Vergara was pushed to vouch for the club's player in February of 2008 when a report by Luis Bueno in Sports Illustrated revealed Padilla's American roots.
Padilla will be eligible to play for Chivas USA pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Jesús is a talented, explosive attacking player who will help our team as we work toward a spot in the playoffs,” said Chivas USA Head Coach Preki. “We’re excited to have him join the squad, and look forward to seeing him in action for our club.”
The versatile player can also perform as a midfielder. He made his debut with the Chivas first team on Aug. 6, 2006 during the Apertura 2006 tournament, and has made 24 regular season appearances (2 starts) with Guadalajara, scoring one goal. In all tournaments, the striker has made 34 total appearances with the club, scoring five goals.
