Goal.com's MLS Player Of Week 22: Toronto's Dwayne DeRosario

Dwayne DeRosario finessed home a glancing header to get Toronto FC on its way to a win against D.C. United and put himself on the way to becoming Goal.com's MLS player of the week.

Dwayne DeRosario didn't only notch his third goal in three games this week, the Toronto FC man also notched Goal.com's Major League Soccer player of matchday 22.

It's looking increasingly like the difference between missing out and a playoffs berth is the pretense of DeRosario. In a 2-0 win over D.C. United, the 31-year-old Canadian international scored the first goal with a glancing header to get TFC on its way.

“TFC's hometown boy scored the game winning goal to push his club past D.C. United and on track to make their first playoffs,” said chief editor Andrea Canales. “They're not there yet, but DeRosario is giving them the needed belief to reach that goal.”

It's the fifth game running that DeRosario has provided either an assist or a goal and his ninth strike of the season, two behind the league's frontrunner Conor Casey. The win catapulted Toronto into third place in the Eastern Conference with nine games left in the regular season.

“He can't do anything but score goals right now,” said Mexico editor Luis Bueno. “Toronto leapfrogged D.C. in the table and De Ro is responsible for that.”

As the season winds races towards the finish, another team looking likely to nab a playoff berth is the Houston Dynamo. Anchoring its stingy defense is Pat Onstad, who pressed DeRosario for Goal.com's prestigious honors.

“The 41-year-old silver-haired veteran made eight saves to shutout Real Salt Lake in a scoreless draw,” said Seattle correspondent John Zielonka. “Onstad used positioning and experience to make several spectacular stops to record his league leading ninth shutout of the season.”

Other players to receive votes were Seattle Sounders FC's Fredy Montero, Toronto's O'Brian White, and the Chicago Fire's Marco Pappa.
