Goal.com's MLS Player Of Week 19: RSL's Yura Movsisyan
Goal.com's MLS player of the week for matchday 19 is RSL's Yura Movsisyan, who hit a second half brace against FC Dallas.
He may be Denmark-bound in January, but that doesn't mean Yura Movsisyan isn't going to make waves at Real Salt Lake while he's still there. The latest wave: winning Goal.com's Major League Soccer player of the week for matchday 19.
“A halftime sub, Movsisyan sparked the RSL comeback by scoring two goals as they turned a 2-0 halftime defecit into a 4-2 victory over FC Dallas,” said contributor Seth Vertelney. “After a slow start to the season, Movsisyan seems to be rounding into form ahead of his move to Randers FC of the Danish Superliga at the end of the season.”
The brace took the 21-year-old's tally to six on the season. After only one goal in the opening 11 games of the year, Movsisyan has hit five in the last seven games to keep RSL in the playoff picture.
“He did not start because of an ankle injury that he picked up in training,” explained Salt Lake correspondent Randy Davis. “However, he came on at the start of the second half with RSL down 2-0 and helped to completely change the game. His two goals were simply a symptom of the hard-work and effort that he gave for the entire second half.”
Those two goals helped turn what looked like a sure loss into three points. Jason Garey had a similar contribution for the Columbus Crew, heading home in injury time to give the defending Cup holders the win.
“Jason Garey propelled his squad to the top of the East with a pinpoint header in stoppage time,” said chief editor Andrea Canales. “His play has helped compensate for the loss of MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto.”
The Kansas City Wizards' Claudio Lopez also received votes for an audacious goal of the year candidate struck from his own half.
