Goal.com's MLS Player Of Week 18: LA Galaxy's Landon Donovan
Goal.com's MLS player of the week for matchday 18 is the LA Galaxy's Landon Donovan.
Landon Donovan has been playing like a man possessed, and it's been enough to see him nab Major League Soccer player of the week honors from Goal.com.
After collecting an ESPY award for Best Upset with the United States national team, Donovan took a red eye flight to New York to play the Red Bulls. A stunning volley of the highest technical proficiency and a lobbed assist later, he returned home with his Los Angeles Galaxy teammates 3-1 winners.
“His goal and assist against the New York Red Bulls led the Galaxy to a resounding win over their Eastern rivals,” said Seattle correspondent John Zielonka. “Donovan's soaring shot at the top of the box and high into the net was the highlight goal of the week.”
The New York match marked David Beckham's return to the Galaxy, and the two stars embraced before the match as if to signal that any controversy left from the quotes in Grant Wahl's book, The Beckham Experiment, was put behind them. Two days after the Red Bull win, which gave the team a four game winning streak in MLS, Donovan and Beckham played AC Milan to a 2-2 draw in an international friendly.
“Great goal. Great assist,” commented New York correspondent Terry Steed. “All after catching the red eye from the ESPYs in LA to NY and dealing with The Beckham Experiment fall out. And as a bonus he looked dangerous versus Milan yesterday, adding another assist.”
Another player had a goal-and-assist match in MLS action this matchday: the Chicago Fire's Cuauhtemoc Blanco. He came into the match against the San Jose Earthquakes with the scores level at zero before turning the game on its head, creating two in the final ten minutes.
“Not sure what was more difficult: to pick out Nyarko inside the box with defenders closing in on him or to chip a shot over Joe Cannon when it didn't seem like he had that option available,” said Mexico editor Luis Bueno.
Columbus Crew strike pair Jason Garey and Steven Lenhart each received a vote for their roles in a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake.
