Goal.com MLS Rankings: Falling Goats
Chivas USA slides down the Goal.com MLS rankings after losing to Los Angeles on Saturday night as another Western Conference team makes its push for top spot.
1. Houston – Losing to a questionably awarded goal and a Pat Ianni bicycle kick probably isn't a scenario the Dynamo had anticipated prior to Saturday's 2-1 reverse in Seattle. (1)
2. Seattle – Sounders FC climbs into second spot after finally overhauling Chivas USA with its victory. Fredy Montero – goals in five straight games – is a big reason why. (4)
3. D.C. United – With the West's top dogs out of the way, it's time to sort out the mess in the East. United stays ahead for now based on its 1-1 draw in Columbus last weekend despite falling a point behind. (2)
4. Columbus – A better performance in Bridgeview – plus Will Hesmer's heroics – earned the Crew a point in Chicago. (5)
5. Chicago – Got a few e-mails last week wondering why I had placed the Fire so low in the rankings. The Fire answered the question for me: Chicago just doesn't win enough at home (1-2-4 on the season) to merit top two or three consideration right now. (6)
6. Chivas USA – The Goats have officially lost the benefit of the doubt after Saturday night's 1-0 loss to L.A. in the SuperClasico. (3)
7. Colorado – Omar Cummings and Conor Casey are back in the saddle again when the Red Bulls visit on July 26. (7)
8. Los Angeles – The Beckham circus is coming to town. Can the Galaxy – winners of three straight matches and currently tied for a playoff spot – handle it? (8)
9. Toronto FC – Beating that dismal San Jose performance cuts no ice in these rankings, especially with fellow winners Colorado and Los Angeles just a point behind in the overall standings. (9)
10. Real Salt Lake – RSL gets a boost during its bye week... (11)
11. Kansas City – ...after the tired Wizards fail to polish off a battered Revolution side... (10)
12. New England – ...that is going to lose the advantage of having games in hand if it doesn't start getting healthy quickly. (12)
13. FC Dallas – With Saturday's loss in Commerce City, the Hoops sit seven points behind the fourth place duo of L.A. and Colorado out West. (13)
14. San Jose – Flat and dismal. Those two adjectives best describe San Jose's performance in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Toronto FC on Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. If things don't improve soon, those qualifiers may end up describing the Quakes' season too. (14)
15. New York – Congrats, Red Bulls fans. Your team can't lose during a bye week. (15)
