VIDEO: Sounders At Portland Preview Of Future MLS Rivalry
The old USL foes faced off in Open Cup play and the atmosphere at PGE park provided a preview of what their future MLS clashes may be like.
Seattle Sounders FC, the newest expansion team, has made an impact in Major League Soccer both on the field and off. Their impressive fanbase has been fervent supporting their club.
Yet back when the Sounders were part of USL-1, they had an especially heated rivalry with a team in nearby Oregon, the Portland Timbers.
The Timbers are undergoing their own MLS evolution, and are now set to join the upcoming round of league expansion.
The Open Cup, the oldest soccer competition in the USA, doesn't care about different leagues, though, as every level of clubs, from amateur to professional, participates.
Thus, Portland and Seattle became regional rivals again, giving fans a brief glimpse into what their MLS clashes may eventually be like. Though the Sounders prevailed on the field, 2-1, Portland showed that in the stands, they can match the Sounders fans for passion and then some.
