It started out as one of the biggest soccer news stories in the history of the sport in the United States. Though there were various signs of success, David Beckham’s move to MLS has been dubbed by many as a failure.

In a new book written by SI’s Grant Wahl, Beckham’s time with Los Angeles is investigated and the true face of the matter is brought to the forefront.

“At the news conference introducing Gullit, the 19 Entertainment logo was plastered all over the backdrop. Beckham's handlers had essentially taken over the Galaxy, snatched away Lalas' power and installed their man as coach.” -- an excerpt from The Beckham Experiment.

That’s the story of Beckham’s time as a Galaxy player in a nutshell. It only became more complicated once he orchestrated his loan move to AC Milan:

“Donovan was right. Beckham produced two goals and two assists in his first five games for Milan and announced that he wanted to stay in Italy instead of returning to the Galaxy. Thus began a monthlong global saga of negotiations involving Milan, L.A. and MLS. The result: Beckham would finish the Serie A season and rejoin the Galaxy in July, midway through the MLS season.” -- an excerpt from The Beckham Experiment.

With July upon us, Beckham is set to return to the Galaxy to finish the season. What comes after that is unknown, but as he has stated publicly while playing in Milan, Beckham wants to return there as soon as he can.

Grant Wahl’s book, The Beckham Experiment is set to be released on July 14th.
