San Luis Spanks Young Tigres Team In 3-1 Win
Tigres got away with fielding reserves in a SuperLiga match versus Chivas USA, but San Luis made them pay in the second match of group play.
The second round of Group A play in the SuperLiga tournament pitted a
young Tigres team of reserve players who were confident coming off a
victory versus Chivas USA, against San Luis, which had suffered a loss
already to the Chicago Fire.
The outcome of this match, however, was age and experience winning out over youthful enthusiasm, as San Luis earned a comfortable 3-1 victory.
First Half
The youngsters of Tigres did well in the opening period to hold out against San Luis.
The Tigres players, in fact, created scoring chances of their own. Juan Pablo Garcia, a former Major League Soccer player with Chivas USA, led the attack.
Garcia came close with an attempt in the 15th minute, nearly giving Tigres an early advantage.
It was a testy, hard fought game, and San Luis' Braulio Luna was shown a yellow card for dissent in only the 23rd minute.
Despite the efforts of both teams, halftime arrived with match still scoreless.
Second Half
Everything started to go San Luis' way in the second half.
Braulio Luna stood over a freekick in the 53rd minute. When the veteran sent the ball into the box, a rush of players broke for it, including the goalkeeper. However, the ball eluded them all, bouncing merrily into the goal.
Three minutes later, a good give and go play freed Jose Reyes in the box and he deftly hit a half-volley chip into the side of the net.
With a two-goal lead, San Luis seemed to relax a little. This allowed Garcia to pounce, and his strike off an assist from Emmanuel Cerda found the goal.
The scoring didn't end there, however. Before the Tigres players could find an equalizer, San Luis reasserted themselves and scored one more. Reyes again found the net in the 76th minute with the help of Alfredo Moreno.
The result leaves all the teams in the group alive going into the final day. San Luis and Tigres have 3 points each, Chivas USA currently has none, and the Fire have 6.
