Sounders FC Beat ‘Quakes For Second Victory In Ten Games

Seattle beat San Jose 2-1 in a physical match that featured a number of fine saves by ‘Quakes goalie Joe Cannon and a goal from the Sounders' designated player, Freddie Ljungberg.

SEATTLE, Wash.— In their second meeting of the season, two teams struggling to earn a win met in front of another Seattle sellout crowd of 28,999.

With the 2-1 win, Seattle (5-3-5) now has 20 points, while San Jose’s (2-7-4) road woes continued as their point total remained at nine. Both teams struggled recently to win a match.

Seattle’s last MLS win was against the ‘Quakes on April 25.  After tonight’s game, San Jose has just won once in their last 11 matches.

Seattle Sounders midfielder Freddie Ljungberg scored his second goal of the year in the first half.  Forward Fredy Montero netted his team-leading fifth goal of the year for the Sounders in the second half.  Midfielder Darren Huckerby scored San Jose’s only goal.

Referee Silviu Petrescu struggled to keep the game under control with bodies and tackles flying all over the pitch.  He issued a total of seven yellow cards, with four going to the ‘Quakes. Despite receiving fewer cautions, Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid and Ljungberg weren’t happy with the officiating after the game ended.  Both openly shared their opinions with the officials at midfield.

First Half

Seattle Sounders FC played without two key starters, forward Nate Jaqua and defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado.

Jaqua received a red card in the previous match against Columbus.  In the same game, Hurtado earned his fifth yellow card of the season, for which he was suspended one game.

The first 15 minutes of the match each team played cautiously without generating any significant scoring opportunities.

The action and physical play picked up with the issuance of a yellow card to ‘Quakes defender Aaron Pitchkolan for a dangerous tackle on Seattle forward Sebastien Le Toux in the 16th minute.

The Sounders faithful were in an uproar three minutes later when ‘Quakes defender Jason Hernandez used his shoulder to bring Sounders midfielder Steve Zakuani to the ground.

Referee Silviu Petrescu kept the caution in his pocket as the home crowd disapproved.

San Jose ‘keeper Joe Cannon made his first outstanding save in the 23rd minute.  He used his right hand to stop a sure goal from Montero’s header in front of the goal.

A minute later, with ‘Quakes midfielder Darren Huckerby bearing down on the net, Seattle goalie Kasey Keller beat Huckerby to the ball and kicked itl away to midfield.

In the 30th minute, Ljungberg’s free kick headed towards the San Jose penalty box area.  Sounders Brad Evans barely missed redirecting the ball as Cannon made a fine save near the right post. Nine minutes later, Cannon again kept the Sounders off the scoreboard when he used his right foot to stop a point blank shot from Montero.

Yet the Sounders scored in the 42nd minute to take a 1-0 lead.  Montero passed the ball to Le Toux, who made a one touch pass with his left foot to Ljungberg.  Ljungberg chipped it over Cannon to break the deadlock.

Second Half

Midfielder Antonio Ribeiro, received the third San Jose caution for a reckless tackle from behind on Ljunberg in the 50th minute.

Ljungberg got a measure of revenge nine minutes later.  His corner kick into the box was deflected by defender Patrick Ianni to the right foot of Montero, who made no mistake in putting it inside the post for his fifth goal of the season.

The Sounders now held a 2-0 lead. San Jose upped their tempo after Seattle’s goal.

In the 68th minute, with Montero deep inside his own territory, he inadvertently kicked the ball back towards the top of the box. Quakes substitute midfielder, Shea Salinas, who had entered the game ten minutes earlier, intercepted the ball and passed it to forward Ryan Johnson on his left.  Johnson crossed the ball to an unmarked Huckerby, who used his left foot to score San Jose’s first goal.

The ‘Quakes continued to pressure and play physically the remainder of the match.  Ljungberg was upended in the 79th minute by San Jose defender Jason Hernandez.

A frustrated Ljungberg looked for a foul, but the officials called it a clean play.

Hernandez struck again in the 89th minute with a leap that knocked down Ljungberg from behind at the top of the box.   In extra time, forward Chris Wondolowski received San Jose’s fourth caution for using his elbows on Sounders midfielder Brad Evans. Ljungberg earned Seattle’s third yellow card of the match for dissent in the 94th minute of play.
