San Jose Earns Away Draw In Dallas
In front of a sparse crowd in Pizza Hut Park, FC Dallas and the San Jose Earthquakes ground out a 2-2 draw which helps neither team climb the table.
FC Dallas squandered a first half lead to draw 2-2 with the San Jose Earthquakes. Goals from Arturo Alvarez and an own goal from Pablo Richetti overturned the opener by David Ferreira. A late Kenny Cooper strike meant both clubs walked away with a point.
The San Jose Earthquakes came into the match with FC Dallas as bottom of the league, despite last week's win over Real Salt Lake. Dallas sat only a point ahead and both sides propped up the Western Conference.
Dallas, missing coach Schellas Hyndman from the bench due to suspension, continued to deploy Jeff Cunningham down the right flank. The 'Quakes welcomed back Darren Huckerby from injury, but he only made his way on to the pitch in injury time. Bobby Convey missed out due to injury, and Brandon McDonald and Aaron Pitchcolan made up the central midfield pairing.
First Half
The home side dominated the dusty pitch in the opening half. Signs of this came in the third minute when Marcelo Saragosa directed a Dave van den Bergh corner towards goal, but Joe Cannon pulled it in.
After twenty minutes, Ferreira showed good work down the right and slid the ball across towards the center of the pitch. Kenny Cooper moved to the ball faster than his markers, but could only hit the ball wide with the outside of his foot.
Half an hour in, Dallas went ahead. Cunningham, who had shown plenty of positive play down the right, burned rookie Mike Zaher and drilled a cross into the box. Ferreira met it unmarked on the six-yard line to calmly side-foot home. It was the Colombian's first goal of the season.
Five minutes before the half, Arturo Alvarez started taking control of the match. First, he hit a free kick that avoided the head of McDonald to elicit a diving reaction save from Ray Burse in the Dallas net to push the looping cross-cum-shot away. Then, a minute later, the former Dallas midfielder whipped a cross into the box that Burse plucked off the head of the charging Ryan Johnson.
Second Half
On the hour mark, San Jose was level. Ferreira barged into substitute Quincy Amarikwa in his half to concede a free kick in what looked like a routine position for the Dallas defense. However, captain Pablo Richetti headed Alvarez's straight-forward delivery past his own 'keeper under no pressure from San Jose attackers to level the scores. The Argentinian will surely want that moment back.
The pathetic attendance of 5,724 had to wait for the last ten minutes to get its money's worth. But really, Arturo Alvarez's goal in the 82nd minute was worth the price of admission alone. The talented 23-year-old burned past Saragosa and Cooper alone the left side of the Dallas box and drilled a shot over Burse from a narrow angle, relying on tremendous power to beat the 'keeper with hardly any of the goal to aim at.
Then, five minutes later, Dallas equalized. Anthony Wallace played a long ball out of the back which substitute Andre Rocha headed on to fellow sub Brek Shea. The rookie controlled coolly and slotted the ball through to Kenny Cooper, putting him alone on goal. The burly striker rounded Joe Cannon and easily slotted home to salvage a point from the game. That strike bumped Cooper up to tied for second in the goal-scoring charts with six.
All that remained of the night was for Englishman Darren Huckerby to make a late appearance. His return to fitness will be a welcome stress-reliever to San Jose head coach Frank Yallop.
The share of the spoils left both camps disappointed.
“Obviously, before the game, to think of getting points on the road is always a positive but being 2-1 up with five minutes left, it feels like we lost,” Yallop said after the match.
Schellas Hyndman felt the same way.
“I am disappointed we didn’t get the win,” he said. “I think every coach should go into a home game thinking that we are better. We have been improving and we were going for the three points, and we had that in the first half. In the second half, we just didn’t really connect a lot with the passes.”
