TORONTO, Canada—Toronto entered the match 2-1-2, in their last five matches, losing the last one at home against the Chicago Fire.  The Revolution came into the match 0-2-3 in their last five, last winning against FC Dallas in week three.  For both sides, a win was crucial in the tight Eastern Cconference to keep pace with the leaders.

First Half

The match started out entertaining with the first chance coming in the 3rd from Revolution striker Steve Ralston.  He headed the ball on goal from inside the six-yard box causing Stefan Frei to make a lunge to his left, but the Swiss keeper contained the ball well.

New England struck first blood in the 13th minute with a Chris Tierney cross from the left to Shalrie Joesph who netted a lovely header into the far corner from 10 yards out. “It was good to get the first goal and set the tone early” said Joesph.

But one minute later TFC struck back when Dichio set up Guevara at the top of the box who blasted the ball past Reis low on the left-side, 1-1.

TFC kept pressing through the half pushing New England back on their heels, but the Revs’ defending remained solid repelling Toronto’s attacks.  Toronto right back Marvell Wynne found himself in an opportune position in the 27th after Emmanuel Osei allowed the ball between his legs, Wynne continued through the box, took a shot on goal but Reis made a brilliant save and the rebound was knocked over the bar.

In the 33rd minute the Revolution had a glorious chance after an Adrian Serioux defensive miscue, falling to the turf as goal-scorer Joseph controlled the through ball into the box from Tierney, but Frei made the save. “He’s one of those converted strikers, he’s tough to handle,” said Serioux of his battle with Joesph throughout the match.

A bit later TFC looked to press again with a lovely through pass from Barrett to De Rosario in the middle of the pitch, who fooled the defender twisting the ball between his legs.  He continued straight in on goal but Reis was up to the challenge and made a fine save.  De Rosario said “I was thinking of going to the far side, but he made a great save.  Reis is a great keeper and you really gotta beat him.”

Second Half

The Revolution started the half with more force attempting to create chances after a dismal five shots in the first half.  48th minute Ralston sliced through the central defenders and took an errand shot over the bar from 10 yards out.  A minute later Ralston let a dummy through to left-winger Tierney cutting into the box unchallenged from 16 yards out, but his shot sailed over the bar.  “It’s unfortunate, we had chances to take the lead early in the second but didn’t capitalize,” said Ralston.

In the 56th minute New England forcing the issue again, Ralston and Joseph moved the ball well in front of the TFC defenders and set up a great opportunity for midfielder Pat Phelan at the top of the 18-yard box, who drove a shot low to Frei’s left-side, but the rookie keeper made the diving save. Three minutes later Revs Midfielder Larentowicz struck a bending free-kick from the right side 40 yards out and almost fooled the keeper as it just sailed over the bar by inches.

Toronto took the lead after they began to settle down and controlling more of the play.  Dichio fought off two Revs midfielders in the middle of the pitch and sent De Rosario, who just remained onside, a lovely through pass and the forward made no mistake placing it in the back of the goal.  “It was a great instinctive play by him (Dichio), knowing where he is on the field” said De Rosario.  Three minutes later Guevara extended the lead to 3-1 as a free-kick from 30 yards out sailed over everyone’s heads and bent into the far right corner of the goal.

Toronto FC climbed to 16 points and temporarily atop the Eastern Conference table pending the outcome of the Real Salt Lake – DC United match later tonight.  New England remains in fifth and may drop depending on the result tomorrow between Chicago and New York.
