Goal.com's MLS Player Of Week 9: D.C. United's Santino Quaranta

Santino Quaranta is Goal.com's MLS player of the week.

D.C. United midfielder Santino Quaranta has nabbed Goal.com's Major League Soccer player of the week honors for round nine of play in the 2009 season.

Back in the starting lineup, the 24-year-old helped spur United to a two-goal comeback in the last 15 minutes against a table-topping Chivas USA.

“He provided the team a lift in the second half against a staunch Chivas team that had given up three goals in its previous nine matches,” said Seattle correspondent John Zielonka.

In a game that saw Chivas sit back and defend after going two goals clear, it was going to take something special to break down the defense ahead of Zach Thornton. Quaranta provided that, and did so only days after fathering a son.

“Santino Quaranta's game-tying goal wasn't as spectacular as Eddie Lewis', but 'Tino did a lot of the little things for DC that were crucial to their two-goal comeback in their draw versus Chivas USA,” explained chief editor Andrea Canales.

A close second in the voting was the Kansas City Wizards' Josh Wolff. After a lengthy spell in Germany, the American striker is back to scoring goals for the 'Zards. A poacher's brace against Real Salt Lake gave KC and important away victory.

“The veteran striker netted two big goals for his club which demonstrated how well he's transitioned back to the life in MLS,” said associate editor Shane Evans. “His strong play has resulted in the Wizards fighting at the top of the Eastern Conference.”

The other player to receive votes was Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.
