Goal.com Major League Soccer Rankings
Kyle McCarthy takes a close look at the teams in the league and lets readers know how they stack up.
(writer's note: Math was never my strong suit in school. Thanks to Steven from Virginia for pointing out my elementary error. Chivas is on 16 points, while second-placed Seattle is four points behind on 12.)
2. Chicago – This Fire side showed plenty of character to scramble out a late point in Columbus one week after Kansas City stole two points from them at home. (3)
3. Seattle – I'd say Steve Zakuani has some potential. (4)
4. Real Salt Lake – Scintillating performance in 6-0 win over New England should boost RSL's confidence heading into derby match at Colorado next weekend. (5)
5. Toronto FC – If Pablo Vitti starts to finish the chances he creates, TFC will have quite the striker. Then again, if Vitti could finish consistently, he likely wouldn't be playing in MLS right now given his experience with the Argentina youth national setup. (9)
6. Kansas City – The good news for Kansas City? They don't have to play Toronto FC again this season. (6)
7. New England – “I think we can take something positive out of this,” Revs midfielder Wells Thompson said after his team lost 6-0 in Sandy. “This might be one of the greatest things to happen to us this year to get our heads back on track and get focused on playing well and playing like a team.” (2)
8. D.C. United – Two late shows in two consecutive weeks for D.C. United. Character looks like a strong suit for Tommy Soehn's men right now. (7)
9. Colorado – “We were fortunate, I think, to get away with one point,” said Colorado goalscorer Colin Clark after his side drew 1-1 with Los Angeles on Saturday night. “When we went up 1-0, I think we kind of just switched off and stopped playing. They got on top of the game and took it to us.” (8)
10. Houston – Good news for Dynamo fans: Ade Akinbiyi made his debut in the orange and white during a 4-0 friendly win over PDL side Laredo Heat. (10)
11. San Jose – Outscored 6-1 in the second half this season. Good teams do better that in the second stanza. (11)
12. New York – That's the Jorge Rojas the Red Bulls thought they were getting last season. The Venezuelan came on at halftime and completely changed the game for the Red Bulls until some ridiculous defending by others in second-half stoppage time undid all of his good work. (12)
13. Columbus – “We've been playing well pretty much every game at home this year but the bounces haven't fallen our way," Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven said after the Crew coughed up a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Chicago. “It was tough when Gino (Padula) got that red card. I felt like we were playing pretty well. After that they took the game to us. It was one of those things. We kept dropping, dropping, dropping and they were able to get two goals.” (14)
14. FC Dallas – “I'm so proud of my teammates for the effort that everybody put in [against Chivas],” striker Kenny Cooper told reporters after FCD lost 2-0 to Chivas USA. “I think we showed great character and determination tonight. Obviously it's not the result we wanted, but I think there are a lot of good things to take from the game. Hopefully, we can continue to play with this quality in our next game and the rest of the season.” (13)
15. Los Angeles – “There's two ways to look at it,” Los Angeles talisman Landon Donovan said after the Galaxy picked up its fourth draw in five matches. “One is we haven't won a game yet, and the second is we're one of only a couple teams that have only lost once. We still feel good about where we are going but we have to start winning games, especially at home.” (15)
