Mexican Legend Claudio Suarez Reverses Retirement

Claudio Suarez has surprisingly reversed his earlier decision to retire, and will continue playing professionally with Chivas USA. The 40-year-old Mexican defender changed his mind only weeks after retiring.

Chivas USA defender Claudio Suarez has reversed his retirement decision and will continue with the Los Angeles-based club. Despite announcing his decision as recently as March 7, 2009, Suarez will continue to play in Major League Soccer, at the sprightly age of 40.

"Claudio Suárez is a living legend of international soccer and his leadership is key to the success of our club," said Chivas USA President and CEO Shawn Hunter. "Throughout his decision-making process, we have maintained an active dialogue with Claudio. We are happy today to announce that he will be back with Chivas USA for the 2009 season."

The player with the most Mexican national team caps of all time won't be available for Chivas USA against the Colorado Rapids tomorrow. Also, considering he missed all of preseason, Suarez will need a couple of weeks to regain full fitness.

His decision likely spells the end of Abel Xavier's Chivas USA hopes. The Former LA Galaxy was on trial with Chivas, but with four central defenders already on the books --Suarez, Shavar Thomas, Jim Curtin, and Bobby Burling -- it's unlikely the former Portugese international will be offered a contract.
