Red Bulls Boost Left Flank With Khano Smith
Seattle Sounders FC have traded away Khano Smith to the New York Red Bulls for allocation money. Smith joined Seattle in the Expansion Draft and has yet to play for the club.
The New York Red Bulls have acquired the rights to Khano Smith. Seattle Sounders FC dealt away the midfielder for allocation money.
Smith is a left sided winger who has spent most of his time in Major League Soccer with the New England Revolution. Seattle selected the player as part of the 2009 Expansion Draft, but have traded him away before he ever suited up for the Sounders.
"One of our priorities before the start of the season was to add depth and athleticism to the left side of our midfield and we feel that we have accomplished this goal by acquiring Khano," said Sporting Director Jeff Agoos. "We think that Khano's pace, athleticism and experience will immediately help our club as we enter the new MLS season."
New York advanced to the final of the MLS Cup last year based in large part to the left flank play of Dave van den Bergh. However, the Dutchman transferred to FC Dallas in the offseason, so the Red Bulls have been moving to replace his offensive output. Khano Smith, a Bermuda international with 24 caps, brings an added element of pace to the left wing position.
New York face Seattle in the opening match of the 2009 MLS season on March 19 at Seattle.
