D.C. United Release DP Marcelo Gallardo
Marcelo Gallardo has been released by D.C. United and now plans on returning to his native Argentina.
D.C. United have released Marcelo Gallardo after the Argentine playmaker spent only a year in the capital city.
Signed prior to the 2008 season as United's first designated player, Gallardo largely failed to deliver on his hefty wages. When he played, he was effective, scoring four goals and assisting three times, but he couldn't stay fit. He appeared in only 20 games for United, and his absences were felt as the team failed to make the playoffs.
However, the decision to part ways was Gallardo's. He requested a split so that he could return to his native Argentina to finish out his career.
"We have agreed to release Marcelo from his contract, per his request," said United General Manager Dave Kasper. "While we are disappointed, we understand his desire to return to his home country. He has been and remains a world class talent and we wish him the best of luck as he enters the next stage of his career."
The 33-year-old has played for River Plate in Argentina for most of his career, but also spent time in France with Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain.
Reports have linked D.C. with the man who Gallardo replaced, Christian Gomez, who is currently out of favor with the Colorado Rapids.
