Houston Sign USA U-20 International Felix Garcia
Houston Dynamo have signed Laredo, TX native Felix Garcia. The 18-year-old has been playing in the PDL for two years already and joins on a Generation adidas contract.
Houston Dynamo have announced the signing of USA Under-20 international Felix Garcia. The 18-year-old signed a Generation adidas contract with Major League Soccer and joins Houston through the allocation process.
Garcia played for his local club, the Laredo Heat of the Premier Development League in 2007 and 2008, and so the Laredo native by-passed this year's draft. MLS paid an undisclosed fee for his services.
"It’s nice to see another young player decide to play in Major League Soccer," Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. "We feel fortunate that we were able to bring Felix to Houston. He comes highly recommended from people I respect, and we look forward to working with him on a day-to-day basis and watching him grow into a very productive professional soccer player."
Bringing Garcia to Houston was not as easy as it looked. The 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup champs had to trade an international spot to Toronto FC for two years to acquire their number 3 position in the allocation rankings. Houston now move to the bottom of the allocation rankings, while Toronto take the number 10 place.
Garcia led the Laredo Heat to the PDL championship game two years in a row, scoring the game-winning penalty kick in 2007. He was still in high school both years. Despite the difficulty in acquiring the Texan youngster and his obvious promise, Houston are determined to be patient with their new star.
"We are very excited to welcome Felix to Houston," Dynamo Chief Operating Officer Chris Canetti said. "He’s obviously a player with a lot of potential, and we’re looking forward to maximizing that potential. We are going to be very patient in his development and are eager to see him grow as a professional player under the positive training environment that Dominic Kinnear has established."
Garcia takes the third of four developmental spot on the Houston roster. Because he is on a Generation adidas contract, his wages will not count against the wage cap.
