Galaxy Try to Win Without Beckham, Donovan

The Galaxy are scheduled to host and compete in the second edition of the PanPacific Tournament, but they will be missing two big stars.

The Los Angeles Galaxy  will participate in the second edition of the Pan-Pacific Championship. However, Coach Bruce Arena will be without two main stars, Landon Donovan and David Beckham, as the pair will be abroad on loans to European teams Bayern Munich and AC Milan, respectively.

The tournament will be played the Galaxy's home ground at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. on Wednesday, February 18 and Saturday, February 21, 2009, in a two-date semifinal and final doubleheader format.

In addition to the host team, the tournament will feature the best clubs from Japan, Korea, and China - J.League’s Yamazaki Nabisco Cup Champion Oita Trinita, K-League champion and winner of the Samsung Hauzen Cup 2008 Suwon Samsung Bluewings, and Chinese Super League winner Shandong Luneng Taishan FC.

The inaugural 2008 championship took place in Hawaii and featured David Beckham, though Donovan was sidelined due to injury. The Galaxy lost their opening match to Japan's Gamba Osaka, the tournament's eventual champions. By virtue of their win over Australia's Sydney FC, the Galaxy placed third and the Houston Dynamo lost to Gamba Osaka in the final to take second.

Neither Beckham nor Donovan are expected back with the Galaxy until March.
