The council advises the president on issues pertaining to health and fitness in America. Gutierrez will remain in the position until May 3, 2010.
"This is such an honor for me and my family," said Gutierrez. "As a soccer player, to sit on a committee with the President and Secretary of Health and Human Services is humbling, but I look forward to the implementation of our collaborative ideas and programs that will ultimately help the American people."
A Major League Soccer original, Gutierrez retired after the 2008 season. He has been heavily involved in benefit work, including campaigning against malaria.
