Marshall Re-Signs with Crew
Chad Marshall will rejoin the MLS Champs in 2009.
The 2008 Defender of the Year, Chad Marshall, will join the 2008 Supporters' Shield and 2008 MLS Cup winners, Columbus Crew.
Marshall has been on trial with German club Mainz 05 over the last couple weeks, but ended talk of his future by signing an extension with Columbus.
"We have made a significant commitment to ensure that Chad remains a member of the Crew and we are very pleased to have gotten that priority accomplished," said Crew technical director Brian Bliss. "It goes without saying that he played a vital role in our championship season and re-signing him allows us to retain our core group of key contributors."
Columbus had three question marks heading into the offseason: re-signing MLS Cup final goalscorer Marshall, re-signing MLS Cup and 2008 season MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto, and re-signing 2008 Coach of the Year Sigi Schmid. They have now accomplished the first two, despite the Riverside, Calif. native and Argentine having completed their contracts and free agent status. Earlier Schmid left to take over the helm of Seattle Sounders FC.
The club have also re-signed Danny O'Rourke, meaning the defensive combo that lead the team to such illustrious heights last year will remain in place.
