Schmid Interviews for Sounders Job
Columbus Crew Head Coach Sigi Schmid was in Seattle this week to interview for the head coach position for expansion team Seattle Sounders FC.
Do you remember way back when the Columbus Crew under the coaching of Sigi Schmid won the MLS Cup? Oh yeah, that was less than two weeks ago.
Schmid, it appears, has moved on quickly. His contract with Columbus expired Sunday after three years at the helm. His first two years proffered little as the team couldn’t even make the playoffs, but his youth policy and work ethic paid off in 2008 as the team won a rare Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup double.
However, news reports suggest that the currently-unemployed Schmid met with Seattle Sounders FC General Manager Adrian Hanauer Thursday. Further meetings were scheduled for Friday as well. He was spotted at the Seattle Seahawks' practice facility - Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
Crew’s owners, the Hunt family, have a penchant for stinginess, but to not renew the contract of such a well respected and successful coach will baffle many. For his part, that Schimd would so soon leave a successful club that has given him the time to build a project is surprising. It will likely take two or three years to make Seattle, an expansion team, competitive.
Prior to his Columbus stint, Schimd coached the Los Angeles Galaxy from 1999 to 2004, leading them to an MLS Cup victory as well. His family still resides in the Los Angeles area.
