MLS Announces Best XI
The team of the year was announced by the league, and it has a heavy Eastern Conference flavor.
The league recently revealed it’s Best XI for the 2008 season, a team that is highlighted by Player of the Year Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Defender of the Year Chad Marshall, and Goalkeeper of the Year Jon Busch.
Six of the eleven players selected played in this year’s Eastern Conference Finals as the Columbus Crew are represented by Schelotto, Marshall and winger Robbie Rogers, while Busch, center-back Bakary Sumare and attacking midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco made the list from the Chicago Fire.
Rounding out the last remaining five spots are Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad, Revolution midfielder Sharlie Joseph, Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan and strikers Kenny Cooper and Landon Donovan of FC Dallas and the LA Galaxy, respectively.
Picking a 3-5-2 line-up shows how many strong candidates there were in the midfield and the attacking attitude the league’s 14 teams showed throughout the season.
GOALKEEPER (1): Jon Busch (Chicago Fire)
DEFENDERS (3): Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Bakary Soumare (Chicago Fire), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew)
MIDFIELDERS (5): Cuauhtémoc Blanco (Chicago Fire), Guillermo Barros Schelotto (Columbus Crew), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew), Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA)
FORWARDS (2): Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy)
