VIDEO: Schelotto on MLS MVP Award
Today in Los Angeles, Guillermo Barros Schelotto was announced the league's most valuable player, as Goal.com had earlier leaked. Watch exclusive video of the playmaker's thoughts.
LOS ANGELES, Calif.--For Guillermo Barros Schelotto, the real prize is yet to
come.
The Buenos Aires, Argentina native picked up the most glowing individual prize available to MLS players, but he’s not about to be content with that. Honored, sure; but not content.
Schelotto led the league with 19 assists, the highest single-season collection since Carlos Valderrama created 26 in 2000. It was his vision and slick passing that pieced together the Crew’s offense. Columbus found the net 50 times, good for second best in the league, on the way to winning the Supporters’ Shield.
The playmaker handily beat out the Los Angeles Galaxy’s Landon Donovan and the Chicago Fire’s Cuauhtémoc Blanco for the award, earning roughly 54% of the vote, including nearly 80% of the media’s approval.
But the regular season success and the individual honors aren’t enough for Schelotto. He wants the MLS Cup.
“Individual awards are important, but I’m much more anxious to win the MLS Cup,” he said, after receiving the award in a ceremony in Los Angeles, CA. “To be the champions is something different. It’s better.”
Columbus will face Red Bull New York to decide the winner of the 2008 MLS Cup on Sunday. He’s already picked up one trophy in Los Angeles, but Schelotto will want to head back to Ohio with two in his suitcase.
