MLS Sunday Round-Up: Galaxy Sunk in 90th Minute, Cooper Rolls for Dallas
A goal from Ryan Cochrane at the death gives San Jose a victory in the California Classico, while Kenny Cooper hits his second straight brace to lead the Hoops past Toronto.
San Jose Earthquakes 3 - 2 Los Angeles Galaxy
The Los Angeles Galaxy downturn continues. Winless in Major League Soccer for two months, the team fell to cellar dwellers the San Jose Earthquakes, 3-2, on a Ryan Cochrane goal in the 90th minute. The game was played in McAfee Coliseum instead of San Jose's usual venue Buck Shaw Stadium to accommodate the David Beckham-fueled masses.
An exciting first half saw three balls find the back of the net. San Jose opened the scoring first in the 8th minute when new acquisition Arturo Alvarez made his presence felt, beating Galaxy keeper Steve Cronin from inside the penalty area. Darren Huckerby, another recent Quakes hire, got an assist on the play.
The Earthquakes doubled its lead in the 40th minute when Huckerby got one of his own, powering a shot through Cronin's hands after the defender marking the former Norwich City man lost his footing. It was Huckerby's second tally in as many weeks.
The David Beckham-Landon Donovan connection brought the Galaxy within striking distance in the 42nd minute. After LA player put his head on Beckham's free kick from 35 yards, the ball slammed off the cross bar and made its way back to the England star. He calmly sent in a cross and Donovan didn't make a mistake, tallying his league-leading 13 goal.
The Huckerby-Alvarez pair almost had another in the 53rd minute but the American's spinning effort glanced off the crossbar.
LA had a chance to score in the 70th minute when second half sub Mike Randolph beat his defender and poked the ball toward the net. After taking a deflection, Quakes keeper Joe Cannon smothered the shot.
Donovan picked up a yellow card in the 73 minute after taking Huckerby down from behind.
Edson Buddle tied the game in the 75th minute with a brilliant piece of individual skill. After receiving a long ball from Cronin 25 yards from net, he juked two Quakes defenders before ripping a shot past Cannon from just outside the 18.
The game looked to be heading towards a tie until a Ramiro Corrales corner kick fell to Huckerby after bouncing around in the box. Cronin made the initial save but failed to control the rebound, which Cochrane slotted into the net just past Beckham's head.
Toronto FC 0 - 2 FC Dallas
Chad Barrett will remember his debut with Toronto for all the wrong reasons. In a game marred by late red cards, the striker -- who came over from Chicago in the Brian McBride deal -- left the field in the 71st minute with an apparent injury to his right leg. Ten minutes after Barrett's departure, Dallas' Kenny Cooper scored the eventual game winner, finishing from the penalty spot. The spot kick resulted from an Amado Guevara foul on Pablo Ricchetti. Guevara was sent off for his offense.
The teams battled in the opening stanza but couldn't produce any results. In the 11th minute, Ricchetti had a half-chance, but sprayed his shot wide right. Six minutes later, Michael Dello-Russo forced a save from Toronto keeper Greg Sutton.
Referee Baldomero Toledo showed yellow to Marco Velez in the 28th minute after the Toronto defender slammed into Dallas keeper Dario Sala on a corner kick. Sala received medial attention, but remained in the net.
Cooper, whose on-again off-again transfer saga continues, put a shot on net in the 33rd minute, but Sutton was up to the task.
The second half began with a flurry of action. Andre Rocha forced a Sutton save with a shot in the 48th minute, while Dominic Oduro made the Toronto keeper work two minutes later. When TFC gained possession, Laurent Robert tried to beat Sala, but his attempt was stuffed.
Rocha saw yellow in the 57th minute for a foul on Amado Guevara.
Toronto's best chance came in the 77th minute on a Laurent Robert corner kick but Dallas defender Michael Dello-Russo cleared the ball from the goal mouth.
The game spiraled out of control in the 81st minute, when Guevara fouled Ricchetti in the penalty area as they fought for a Cooper cross. Toledo sent Guevara off, while awarding Dallas a penalty shot that Cooper finished with ease. Toronto's Jim Brennan also received a caution on the play.
In the 83rd minute, Toronto lost another man when Velez received his second yellow card for dissent.
Cooper put the game out of reach in the 91st minute when he put a long shot past Sutton to seal Toronto's first home loss of the season.
