Report: Steaua Still Chasing FCD's Toja
Dallas All-Star midfielder appears headed to Romania.
Thursday was a good day for FC Dallas midfielder Juan Toja. First he
learned he was called in as a replacement player for the MLS All-Star
team that is set to play EPL side West Ham next week in Toronto. Then
he confirmed that
Romanian club Steaua Bucharest is nearing a deal that would take the
Colombian to Europe.
A report in the Dallas Morning News claims that the two clubs are already in negotiations. "Yes, there has been contact with an offer to FC Dallas," Toja told the Morning News. "I'm very interested because I can play the UEFA Cup and Champions [League]. It's an offer I have to examine."
Toja joined FCD before the 2007 from Argentine giants River Plate. His first season was a wild success, as he scored 6 goals in 27 league apperances and captured the imagination of MLS fans with his floppy mullet hair-do and his exciting attacking play. As an MLS All-Star last year, he scored a goal against Glasgow Celtic.
This year, Toja's production has fallen off. He has played in 15 of the club's 16 league matches, but has only one goal to his name so far.
A member of Colombia's U20 side that won the South American championship in 2005, Toja started his professional career with local side Sante Fe before moving to Argentina in 2006.
Toja's move to Steaua is not done yet. If it goes through, Toja would be eligible to play in their Champions League qualifying third-round series, which is scheduled for August.
