Choose Your Own Interview: D.C. United's Bryan Namoff

Smart answers to dumb questions.

Remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid? Well, our latest feature is basically a Choose Your Own Interview. We contact one player or coach each week, tell him to choose 10 numbers between 1 and 200, and then ask him the corresponding questions from our long list of 200 random questions. If the interviewee selects his numbers wisely, then it’s a piece of cake. But if he selects a question that’s more difficult and, perhaps, a bit embarrassing to answer … hey, unlucky, son.

This week’s subject is D.C. United defender Bryan Namoff.

Could you referee a game and do a good job if you had to?

Namoff: Yeah. I think with all my experience out on the field I could probably do an average job. If I said I could do a great job and then went out and did an average job, I wouldn’t want the fans and players to come after me.

What is the coolest jersey you have ever traded for?

Namoff: I would say after we played Real Madrid, I got Ruud van Nistelrooy’s jersey.

Which player would you love to see on your team one day?

Namoff: Paul Scholes. He’s the guy I watched growing up and is an underrated player. As great as he is, he deserves a bit more exposure.

How many soccer matches do you watch in a typical week?

Namoff: I’d say at least one a week.

Who is the most famous person you know?

Namoff: Good question. Well, if I get a chance to shake Beckham’s hand than I’ll say David Beckham.

Outside of a house or car, what’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever treated yourself to?

Namoff: On the night that I proposed, we went to dinner at a place called The Everest on the 40th floor of the Chicago Board of Trade. I proposed right after the meal. It burned quite a hole in my wallet.

What was the name of the last book you read?

Namoff: I’m in between books right now. It was probably “Moneyball” by Michael Lewis.

What was the last movie you saw?

Namoff: The Happening by M. Night Shyamalan.

Who is the biggest soccer geek on the team?

Namoff: Probably Jaime Moreno.

Where were you when John O’Brien scored against Portugal in 2002?

Namoff: At home, jumping up and down.
