MLS Preview: Chivas USA v. New York Red Bulls
New York is suddenly bursting with energy and confidence, but Chivas presents a tough test.
Chivas USA v. New York Red Bulls
When: 10:30 pm ET
Where: The Home Depot Center, Carson, CA
TV: HDNet
The Gist: For the second time this week New York face the Goats, though this time it will count. The Red Bulls beat parent club Chivas de Guadalajara Wednesday in Arizona and will look to repeat the performance against Chivas USA Saturday evening.
Chivas will look for revenge not only for the mother Goats, but also for the loss they suffered at the hands of the Red Bulls earlier this month.
Why You Should Care: Each team has a chance to leapfrog multiple teams up the standings with wins in the tight packs in the middle of each conference.
Unfortunately for Red Bulls fans, Claudio Reyna and Juan Pablo Angel would have a better chance of playing in this game if it were a celebrity pick-up match held on a small artificial field in New York’s Chinatown. NYRB earned a win at home last week without either player.
The key has been the backline, led by Seth Stammler and Dave Van Den Bergh. New York’s defense has been solid in recent weeks, conceding just one goal to high-scoring New England and then shutting out Dallas.
However, Chivas have a lot of confidence from a 2-0 win over Chicago, while playing the second half a man down. Sacha Kljestan was back in form, and he will be the go-to guy. Ante Razov also looks dangerous, assisting on both goals last week. He always enjoys playing against one of his former clubs.
With the Red Bulls playing solid defense and missing their best offensive weapons, the game should come down to a few chances and which ever team can take advantage of them will wind up with the three points. That should tip the scales in Chivas USA’s favor.
He’s So Hot Right Now: Sinisa Ubiparipovic. The only MLS player from Bosnia & Herzegovina has taken the reins of the offense in Reyna’s absence. Ubiparipovic assisted on the winner against Dallas and again in the friendly with Chivas de Guadalajara.
Prediction: Chivas USA 2, New York Red Bulls 0
