Wolfsburg 2 - 3 Bayer Leverkusen: Rolfes Brings Die Werkself Back To Life

Wolfsburg 2 - 3 Bayer Leverkusen: Rolfes Brings Die Werkself Back To Life

Two goals from substitute Simon Rolfes see the away side fight back from two goals down to take all three points.

In an astonishing game at the Volkswagen Arena, Leverkusen fought back from two goals down to reap a memorable victory over Die Woelfe. Goals from Diego and Grafite looked like handing victory for the home side. However a Arturo Vidal penalty sandwiched in between two Simon Rolfes goals saw Leverkusen earn a scintillating comeback and climb up to third place in the Bundesliga.

It was the away side who created the first chance of the game in the fourth minute.
A long throw-in from Kadlec was amazingly sent towards goal by Derdiyok with his heel. Stand-in 'keeper Marvin Hinz was left rooted to his spot as the ball thundered off the top of the cross-bar.

Despite the early Leverkusen chance it was the home side who looked the more impressive team on the ball and in the ninth minute Diego opened the scoring courtesy of some poor goalkeeping from Rene Adler. A brilliant through-ball by Diego saw Adler rush off his line to clear the ball from the approaching Grafite. However the German international sliced the ball which allowed Grafite to regain it and cross to Diego who made no mistake in scoring the opener.

The home side looked in the ascendancy and came close to doubling their lead on 21 minutes. A brilliant one-two between Diego and Josue saw the goalscorer through on goal. The Brazilian aimed for Adler's top corner but the 'keeper made amends for his earlier mistake by making a stunning finger-tip save.

Die Werkself continued to look second best and some poor defending in the 40th minute nearly allowed Edin Dzeko to score his sixth league goal of the season. A long ball over the top from Josue was met by the unmarked Dzeko who saw his effort turned round the post by Adler.

Leverkusen started the second half well as Die Woelfe struggled to find the same passing fluency that had seen them take control of the game in the first period.

Yet despite Leverkusen's improvement Wolfsburg always looked dangerous on the counter-attack and they scored their second goal on 68 minutes. Dzeko found space on the left side of the away side's box. Adler did get his fingertips to the striker's cross-come-shot but Grafite was on cue to to tap the ball into an empty net to score his fifth Bundeliga goal this season.

It looked like it could be game over for a dejected Leverkusen but the team from Rhine clawed a goal back in the 73rd minute through substitute Simon Rolfes. A free-kick from Arturo Vidal was whipped into the box and with Hitz in no-man's land, Rolfes headed the ball into an empty net.

Astonishingly Die Werkself equalized a minute later. A handball from Hasebe saw the referee point to the spot where Vidal scored despite Hitz getting both hands to the ball.

On 83 minutes the unthinkable happened with Leverkusen taking the lead. The Wolfsburg defense failed to deal with a Vidal set-piece and captain fantastic Rolfes nipped in at the back post to score his side's winner.

Next up for Wolfsburg is an away trip to Nuernberg on Saturday while Leverkusen travel to Aris Thessaloniki in the Europa League on Thursday.
