Having picked up 22 points from a possible 33 since the Irishman took charge, the Black Cats will be looking to take advantage of the Baggies' questionable form at the Hawthorns

Chris Brunt and Zoltan Gera are still out with long-term injuries for West Brom, so the only fresh injury doubt for the Baggies is over Paul Scharner, who is suffering from a rib injury, and it is unlikely he will feature from the start.

For the Black Cats, David Vaughan is doubtful after picking up an ankle injury, but is hopeful of at least making the bench. Defender Matt Kilgallon could also feature after being stretchered off in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea with ankle ligament damage.

  • West Brom has struggled at the Hawthorns this season, losing eight of its twelve games at home, and scoring only nine goals.
  • In their 29 games in all competitions this season, the Baggies have only managed to collect four clean sheets, but their goal difference is still one of the best in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
  • Earlier this season, the two sides drew 2-2 at the Stadium of Light, with the Baggies taking a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes thanks to goals from James Morrison and Shane Long, before goals from Nicklas Bendtner and Ahmed Elmohamady rescued a point for the Black Cats.
  • Last season, West Brom won both of its games against Sunderland, with a Peter Odemwingie goal securing a 1-0 victory at the Hawthorns and goals from Odemwingie, Scharner and Mulumbu earning a 3-2 victory at the Stadium of Light.
  • Since Martin O’Neill took charge, Sunderland have lost just three games in all competitions. In that time they have picked up 22 points from a possible 33 in the Premier League and defeated Arsenal in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
  • This week, James McClean (pictured right) was called into the Republic of Ireland squad for the first time, and Frazier Campbell earned his first England call-up for the friendly against the Netherlands.
  • Sunderland’s top goal-scorer Stephane Sessegnon began his career in Europe as a holding midfielder, and only moved to a more advanced position in the 2007-08 season while at Le Mans.
  • The Beninese striker has scored seven goals so far this season for the Black Cats, having joined during the January transfer window in 2011.
