Scottish midfielder seals home win for the Baggies with long range strike that sees Rangers' poor away from continue
Neither side dominated the game and chances were at a real premium with neither goalkeeper really tested in the 90 minutes. The game was won with the one moment of brilliance in the match as Dorrans fired an excellent long range strike past Paddy Kenny and into the back of the net midway through the first half.
The game started at a very slow pace with neither side showing any real signs of quality on the ball and as a result chances were few and far between. The home side did create an opening in the eighth minute when Fortune robbed Derry deep inside the QPR half, he rolled the ball into the path of Odemwingie but he dragged his left foot shot wide of the goal.
Midway through the opening half the first real moment of quality brought the first goal and it was a lovely long range strike from Dorrans. Odemwingie laid the ball into the path of the Scottish midfielder, he wasn’t closed down quick enough which enabled him to fire a 30 yard strike into the back of the net with Paddy Kenny only able to get fingertips to it.
The visitors only were hardly in the game but they did create two good openings in the opening half, the first of which fell to Samba Diakite in the 33rd minute. Jamie Mackie twisted and turned Ridgewell inside out on the right hand side before rolling the ball into the Mali midfielder inside the penalty area, he was able to turn his defender but fired the wrong side of Ben Foster’s left hand post.
Six minutes later Rangers should have been level but Bobby Zamora was unable to get a header on target from inside the six yard box. Joey Barton delivered an inch perfect cross from the right wing with the outside of his right boot and although Zamora got above his marker he was unable to direct his header on goal.
Albion began the second half keen to double its advantage and it came very close in the opening minutes as Billy Jones struck the post following a neat move. Brunt played a lovely ball inside the QPR defense to Odemwingie, the striker back heeled the ball into the path of Jones inside the penalty area but his poked shot struck the post with Kenny beaten.
The visitors began to press again and the introduction of Shaun Wright-Phillips gave them some extra impetus but Foster continued to be untested. The winger did deliver some dangerous crosses into the penalty area but there was never anyone there to take advantage.
Zamora had another fantastic chance in the 75th minute but he made an absolute mess after great work from Adel Taarabt. It was the Moroccan’s last involvement in the game as he rolled a low pass onto the left foot of Zamora only for the striker to skew his shot harmlessly wide of goal, much to the frustration of his teammate.
Substitute Shane Long should have doubled Albion's lead in injury time but he fired wide of Kenny's goal from the edge of the penalty area when it seemed easier for the Irishman to score.
