VA struck late on to earn a deserved point.
Les Verts’ break came with 14 minutes on the clock. Blaise Matuidi’s center from the left caused confusion in the home defense, and when the ball broke to Emmanuel Riviere he slotted into the net.
It seemed the guests had done enough to hold out for the win, but Gael Danic latched onto Gregory Pujol’s clever backheel to blast the hosts level in the closing stages.
Jeremie Janot in the visiting goal had been forced to look sharp on two occasions in the opening quarter of an hour, making remarkable saves from Pujol and Bobo Balde.
After Sainte struck, the pressure on the visiting goal was released somewhat but VA still managed to go close to a leveler before the break, with Renaud Cohade’s free kick hitting the bar.
Valenciennes’ luck continued to be out for a long period after the interval. Balde’s purposeful near post header was cleared from the line by Christophe Landrin, yet Sainte couldn’t hold out for their first win since September.
