Denied Rooney's powerful strike from 10 yards and also beat away a stabbed shot from Sturridge. Most impressive though was his commanding of the area, as he plucked numerous crosses out the air under pressure.
Struggled to deal with the overlapping runs with Baines and regularly allowed the left back to hit the byline and get crosses in. Was a threat going forward through and joined in the attacks.
Was extremely lucky still to be on the pitch at half time as he cynically blocked the run of Sturridge down the right-hand side while on a yellow. Headed plenty of crosses out of the box though.
Allowed himself to be better by Johnson on one or time occasions but mostly kept the right back in check. Appeared to be knocked unconscious in the second period but somehow battles on.
Put it a good performance despite his young age, and benefit from the guidance of Godin. Was rash in the challenge at times but ultimately remained solid at the back.
Flexed his muscles against the England midfield and regularly dispossessed them with his brute strength, but was left wanting in possession though as his distribution wasn't great.
Was deployed in the position just behind Suarez and Cavani and was quite effective in linking the play at times and managed to slide some decent passes through the middle.
Barely got involved in the match as most of Uruguay's play went through Suarez down the left channel. Supported the attacks but never really got involved. Withdrawn in the second half.
Didn't provide as much width as was probably required but did put in an admirable defensive shift, as he was always retreating back to help out Pereira.
Didn't pose much of a goal threat himself but was impressive as the supporting act to Suarez. Picked out his teammate for the opening goal with a fantastic cross to the back post.
Showed no signs of slow energy of injury as right from the get-go he was up for it. Scored the opener with a wonderfully taken header and pounced on a defensive mistake to lash a strike home for his second.
Could have did nothing to prevent either goal and actually kept England in with a shout after the break as he made two terrific saves to deny Suarez.
Had a very shaky first half in which he looked nervous in possession under the pressure of the Uruguay attackers. Completely lost the run of Suarez to the back post which saw the Liverpool man score the first goal, and then didn't slot in behind Gerrard for the second as he allowed the Uruguayan to drift in again.
Showed attacking ambition throughout the match but his final product was too hot and cold. Assisted Rooney's goal but didn't taken enough of advantage of the space awarded to him on the right.
A much more confident performance this evening. Provided much needed width down the left-hand side and made some overlapping runs to get some decent balls into the box.
Made one terrific block to deny a close range Cavani strike that would have saw England go down 2-0. Was erratic in his clearances though, which were regularly humped up the park without though.
Displayed plenty of energy in the middle of the park but was guilty of not moving the ball quick enough in central areas and seemed too content to sit deep beside Gerrard in midfield instead of attempting supporting runs to the strikers.
Put in a half-hearted tackle which didn't come off in the middle of the park in the lead up to the opening goal which saw Uruguay counterattack to score. Misjudged a header in midfield which went allowed Suarez to run in and score.
Showed glimpses of his pace and dribbling ability in the final third but decision making was suspect as he regularly held on to the ball for too long. Drifted out of the match as was subbed on 60 minutes.
Initial hold up play was pretty decent but it was everything thereafter which lacked. Passing to teammates was loose and failed to get his head up whenever attempting a marauding run.
Was extremely unlucky not to score when his free kick missed by inches, but perhaps should have scored a few minutes later when he crashed a header off the bar from close range. Eventually grabbed his first World Cup goal with a tapped finish.
Was completely suffocated by the Uruguay defense as he was desperately bereft of save. Had a couple of erratic shots on goal but did test Muslera with a decent strike towards the bottom corner.
