Live Commentary

  • Thanks for following along with our live commentary. Once again, I'm Rudi Schuller (@RudiSchuller), and it was my pleasure to bring you the action tonight.
  • Seattle wins 2-1 in a match that would have been fair if it were a draw. Full credit to the visitors for taking advantage of a sleepy TFC defence in the first half.
  • 90' + 3'
HUGE SAVE HAHNEMANN! Brockie somehiw finds himself WIDE open inside the 18, and his turn and shot are blocked by the onrushing American 'keeper. The ensuing corner comes to nothing, and the ref blows the whistle to end the game! That was a game saver by the big Seattle goalie.
  • 90' + 2'
Osorio takes a shot that goes a foot high. The kid trying to be a hero for TFC late.
  • 90' + 1'
    Substitution Richard Eckersley Justin Braun
  • 90'
    Three minutes added on.
  • 89'
    Substitution Brad Evans Marc Burch
  • 85'
Earnshaw gets a weak shot straight at the Seattle keeper.
  • 84'
Seattle doing a good job of keeping Toronto in its own half, killing precious seconds.
  • 80'
TFC with all the pressure, but it hasn't paid off. To Seattle's credit, they bent but not broken yet.
  • 75'
    Yellow Card Shalrie Joseph
  • 72'
    Substitution Mauro Rosales Shalrie Joseph
  • 72'
    Substitution Reginald Lambe Álvaro Rey
  • 72'
Rey coming in for Lambe. The Spaniard looked good in his TFC debut against AS Roma in the midweek. For Seattle, Joseph comes in, presumably to lock down the midfield and try to preserve this lead.
  • 69'
ANOTHER CLOSE ONE! A very near own goal by Seattle as Labe dribbles through everyone on the left and whips a ball across that Traore tries to control, but his touch nearly puts the ball into the Sounders goal. We're talking inches wide.
  • 63'
TFc come close again! Eckersley sends in a low ball from the right that barely misses Brockie, but Earnshaw is at the far post to clean up. His shot is blocked at the last possible moment by a Sounders defender.
  • 60'
OFF THE POST! Earnshaw gets his first look at goal, and it puts it off the woodwork! He probably should have passed it to a wide open Borckie on the far side, to be honest. But still, great effort by the Welshman.
  • 58'
CLOSE! Doneil Henry gets above the crowd and nods a ball just wide of the Seattle goal.
  • 56'
    Substitution Andrew Wiedeman Robert Earnshaw
  • 51'
Seattle is clearly on the back foot, as Toronto smells blood after the bright start to the second half. At the very least, the big crowd here at BMO Field has been awakened from its slumber.
  • 46'
    Goal Jonathan Osorio
As I finish writing that, TFC marches down the field and SCORES! Osorio with a deft touch and just enough to get it over the line as Toronto pulls back to within one.
  • 46'
Second half is underway, and TFC trots out the same XI. That's pretty surprising, seeing how flat they looked.
  • Here's an interesting stat: Seattle has two goals from ONE shot on goal. That's some great efficiency.
  • Geiger blows his whistle for haltime. Truth be told, Seattle is pretty fortunate to be up by two at this point. It's more a casse of TFC's defence looking a shambles than the Sounders being particularly impressive over the first 45. Perhaps 3 games in 6 days is catching up to the home side?
  • 45'
Henry and Dempsey collide at the top of the TFC area, leading to a free kick for Seattle. Dempsey steps up to take it, and it glances off the wall for a corner. The ensuing CK results in nothing as Toronto clears.
  • 43'
Brockie shoots wide after he gets into the area following a beautiful little play by Laba to dispossess SEattle and send in the dangerous ball.
  • 40'
    Own Goal Doneil Henry
GOAL! Looks like an own goal off Doneil Henry as Toronto looks uncharacteristically disorganized at the back.
  • 36'
Seattle finds itself in a 3 v 2 situation, and the ball gets to Dempsey, who gets bowled over by Ashtone Morgan inside the TFC area. No call from referee Geiger as the new DP looks bemused. Welcome back to MLS, Deuce.
  • 33'
    Substitution Obafemi Martins Clint Dempsey
The American star comes on to a round of boos from BMO FIeld.
  • 32'
Dempsey's warming up on the sidelines after Martins hobbled off the pitch.
  • 29'
The game is really opening up here, which you'd have to think favours the Sounders vaunted attack. Play seems to reflect that as Seattle has enjoyed more positive possession over the past several minutes.
  • 24'
Wiedeman just wide! The TFC striker cuts inside and unleashes a bomb from 20 yards that finds the side netting. Some of the crowd was fooled into thinking the ball had gone in, but it was deceptively wide.
  • 23'
    Yellow Card Eddie Johnson
  • 23'
Seattle gets a good spell that results in a Martins headed effort going well out. Despite the poor final touch, the Sounders are looking a bit more confident after the goal.
  • 20'
Toronto comes close as Brockie whips in a low cross from the left that Wiedeman JUST can't get to. It rolls harlemessly wide with no other player from either side in sight.
  • 17'
That Rosales strike was Seattle's first road goal in 343 minutes. It was all a little too easy for the visitors.
  • 16'
    Goal Mauro Rosales
GOAL! Eddie Johnson manages to get behind the TFC defence and nod a ball across the face of goal that found a wide open Rosales. The Settle man easily picked out the corner past a helpess Joe Bendik.
  • 12'
Sounders getting more into the match now, leading to some decent pressure on both ends. Nothing too dangerous yet, though.
  • 9'
Ouch! Yedlin goes for a run down the right flank, and Brockie scythes him down from behind. The free kick from 35 yards out comes to nothing for the Sounders, however.
  • 5'
Brockie gets off a shot after a series of decent passes by TFC. It goes well wide, but it's a good start for the home side.
  • 2'
CLOSE! Osorio with some fancy moves to beat two defenders and make room for himself. His shot from 18 yards out is just wide.
  • 1'
    And we're off!
  • Anthems are done, we're moments away from kickoff.
  • Toronto's a pretty late-arriving town to begin with, so it's extra bad today.
  • BMO FIeld is pretty sparse just ahead of the anthems, despite the stadium being pretty close to sold out. With the Toronto subway system partially shut down, and a bunch of road closures happening, it's pretty much "Traffic-nado" in the city tonight. Stadium should be filling in gradually during the opening moments.
  • As mentioned, Dempsey starts on the bench. For Toronto, Robert Earnshaw returns to the 18 after an extended injury layoff. He put in a good 45 minutes on Wefnesday night against AS Roma, and I thought he'd get a shot at starting tonight, but Ryan Nelsen sticks with the identical lineup that defeated New England last week.
  • Seattle subs: Gspurning, Scott, Burch, Joseph, Carrasco, DEMPSEY, Zavaleta
  • Seattle Sounders starting XI: Hahnemann; Yedlin, Ianni, Traore, Gonzalez; Rosales (C), Alonso, Evans, Neagle; Martins, Johnson.
  • Toronto FC subs: Frei; Agbossoumonde, Elmer, Hall, Rey, Braun, Earnshaw.
  • Toronto FC starting XI: Bendik; Eckersley, Caldwell, Henry, Morgan; Lambe, Laba, Osorio, Convey; Wiedeman, Brockie
  • On to the lineups...
  • Interestingly, both sides head into tonight riding two-game winning streaks. Seattle has to be favoured to continue its good form against a bottom-feeding TFC, but thisis football and strange things happen.
  • Of course, tonight will likely be the MLS re-debut of Clint Dempsey, the US international who just returned from a long stint in England and signed on with Seattle for a league-record salary. He's still in pre-season mode so he's not starting tonight, but we'll almost surely see him on the field at some point.
  • It's been an absolutely gorgeous day here in Toronto, with temperatures getting up to around 27C. With just over 20 minutes to go until kickoff, it's 20 degrees C at BMO Field, feeling like 23C with the humidty factored in. For our American friends, that's around 74 degrees F. A perfect night for a momentous day in MLS.
  • Hello and welcome to Goal's live commentary of Toronto FC - Seattle Sounders. I'm Rudi Schuller (@RudiSchuller), and I'll be bringing you the action from BMO Field.
